The Dead Next Door Lyrics

watch the sky
for a reason why
I'm safe here
Sunday was hot
Monday was not
Monday was not
for the dead next door
one pair of silent terror reigns
and we're the dead next door

The heat of the day fades away
Fades into the night
The heat of the day
Offering a wedding
Suffering away
For the dead next door
You see
One error, silent terror
And we're the dead next door

In animal land
the dark is in command
one thing you should know
don't hear them knocking
don't eat out of their hand
don't stumble, die
You say
don't stumble, cry
they see you and me
You and me
With the dead next door
You and me
With the dead next door
You and me
With the dead next door

This song is basically about not fearing death... I believe he's saying we're all dead in a way, or we're already dying. Our next door neighbor is dying, the woman who checks you out is dying, the child carrying a balloon is too. We're all dead but we're living. Sounds depressing, but I think he's just saying 'live.'

'live' and don't worry about death.^

I've been a Billy Idol fan since i was 12. I still recall 20 years ago (in '87) playing this song after my uncle took his life. It's an eerie song, but a beautiful one because it always reminds me of him.

So this is a bit interesting and depressing. Maybe I should have been a songwriter. I've loved this song for so many years - one of my all time favs! - but TBH I never checked out the lyrics. Now I'm a bit mystified, because this is what I thought the lyrics were:

Watch the sky No reason why I would say sure Sunday was hot Monday was not Monday was not for the dead next door.

One error, silent terror, and we're the dead next door.

The heat of the day Aye it fades away fades away The heat of the day Suffering away Suffering away For the dead next door. You see.

One error, silent terror, And we're the dead next door.

In animal love, In dark as ink and blood One thing you should know.

Don't hear their cries, Don't eat out of their hands.

Ghosts don't die, You see, Ghosts don't cry, It's easy.

You and me You and me With the dead next door You and me With the dead next door You and me With the dead next door

Maybe it's one of those "you see beauty where you want" sorta things, but I'm a bit disappointed in the real lyrics! :(

@R0T0RHEAD You are correct in some of your lyrics. The songs "Printed lyrics" contain some errors. The song does say Suffering away twice, not "offering a wedding" as it was printed. And the song does say: In animal love, and dark is in command. One thing you should know. Don't hear their cries, Don't eat out of their hands. Ghosts don't die, You see, Ghosts don't cry, They see you and me.

Billy Idol's song, The Dead Next Door, serves as a contemplation and warning about the pitfalls of pursuing purely physical, carnal desire at the expense of deeper emotional intimacy. Idol observes a loveless, emotionally hollow couple living next door, describing them as "the dead next door" - a state he fears slipping into himself if he succumbs too far to impulses of "animal love" and one-night stand couplings devoid of authentic connection. With visceral imagery, he captures the allure but also emptiness of purely primal sexual urges, cautioning against letting lust dominate to the point of becoming numb, passionless "ghosts." Ultimately, it's a recognition of the need to balance carnal desires with cultivating true emotional bonds to avoid ending up like "the dead next door."
