O Please Bring Her Back Lyrics

Go to sleep, sweet child
Push aside your cares
Calm your beating heart
Ease your furrowed brow

O God please stay here
The night is windy and dark
God, sit by my side
God, stay through the night
Bring her please
Please bring her back

I can't but shut my eyes
Can't but quicken my pulse
Sweat beads on my neck
Tears well in my eyes
Bring her please
Please bring her back

She began my heart a-beating
She began my mind a-lovin'
She starts my hands a-feelin'
She's as much of me as I am
Bring her back
O please bring her back

do you think the singer is speaking to G-d, asking Him to sit with him/stay through the night/etc.? or that he is using His name for emphasis, but still speaking to the girl?

This song is about the fondness between a mother and child. It is also an allegory to your first love, your first love instinctually is your mother. He's longing for the feeling of that fondness, perhaps their lover or mother has passed or abandoned them. Sometimes these moments of abandonment and despair bring us closer to our higher power. He begs god not to leave his side and stay through the night, and oh please just bring her back. Her is a pronoun for the feeling he is longing, which is the most true and carnal form of love - between a mother and child, even before birth, and after.

I believe this song is about the bond between a child and mother, and an allegory to the feelings of first love. The first verse is to reminisce of how a mother can calm a child. It seems as if at one point she may have passed, or, another female in his life is comparitive to the love his mother may have brought him. She began my heart a-beating She began my mind a-lovin' She starts my hands a-feelin' She's as much of me as I am Bring her back O please bring her back ^ Only a mother can begin a heart beat, or hands to feel, etc. The same can be said for a first love.

This song seems to present the birth of a child, perhaps within an incubation tank or simply sleeping. It seems that the father is so frightened that the child will not awaken from its sleep and simply wishes to his God that the child will awaken. When he speaks of how the child sparked his love, he is saying that the child is the first time that he has known unconditional love. The child sparked a paternal instinct within him that he had never before know.
