Incident In A Medical Clinic Lyrics

Quite unbelievably
I want someone to be sweet to me
When I am in absolutely horrible pain
Thank you for keeping this vigil, doctor
These infections are becoming quite popular
I never meant for it to turn out quite this way

An antidote’s been elusive
The specialist can’t deduce
If this isn’t curable
Now a disease defines me
My fever intensifies.
See, I get delusional

Some survive,
Some survive,
Some survive
Because of the way that they walk
Because of the look in their eyes
(Look in their eyes)

“Almost everybody has, has snail fever,”
The doctor whispered in my ear,
“Some get treated, feel better. Some don’t.
The cause is still unclear
We are unable to treat you here.”
Unwilling patients with treatments
They suddenly discontinue
Dangerous infections
Are sneaking into superficial wounds

Some escape
With their lives
Some survive
Because of the way that they walk
Because of the look in their eyes
(Look in their eyes)

Scratch an existing wound, open an old one
It’s extraordinarily hard
Succumbing bone-by bone, bone and bowel, heart-in-hand
This diseases pervades us all
It can therefore manifest anywhere, in anyone, at any moment

Dr. Bernstein, Bernstein

Quite unbelievably
I want someone to be sweet to me
When I am in absolutely horrible pain

I read that it is about schistosomiasis, which is nicknamed "snail fever". You can wiki it to read more, but it is undoubtedly what the song is about.

I had heard that the songs on Oh! Perilous World! were allegories for modern day phenomenon. Not sure where so I could be completely wrong but if so, the snail fever in the song could be an allegory for HIV/AIDS. Some supporting quotes are "Specialists can't deduce if this is incurable." "Now a disease defines me" Also, the fact that some survive and it is only explained by "the way that they walk" or "the look in their eyes."

Snail-Fever and the neglegence between some stupid doctors and desperate patients holding on for dear life.

"Some survive, Some survive, Some survive Because of the way that they walk Because of the look in their eyes (Look in their eyes)"

self-explanitory.

Before I researched about snail fever, I had an idea about this song being about a person who is masochistic, and then this mental "disease" was spreading across, say, conservative Victorian society. In any case, the first/last line of this song definitely gives it deeper meaning.

This is the first Rasputina song I'd heard, and it's still one of my favorites. Before reading what it was about, it reminded me of Silent Hill. The line "Because of the way that they walk" reminded me of the strange way the nurses in the hospital walked, and the line "Because of the look in their eyes" seemed to me a reference to the fact that the nurses have no eyes. Please don't take this review seriously. This is just what I thought of when hearing the song.
