this is def about the book lovely bones... its about a 14 year old girl that get burtally raped and killed my her negibor while she was taking a short cut home on a cold winter day..... the rest of the story is told by her ghost and her heaven... her family starts to fall apart and her sister goes a little wild... she wishes that she can still be alive but thats the only thing that can't happen in her heaven. before she dies she falls in love with a "bad boy".. this is a great book I recomend you reading it if you like the song :)

I have to agree with leech. I absolutely adore the book, Alice Sebold is an awesome writer. If anyone cares to, read the book, and this song will make perfect sense.
This song is about leaving your family, the rare one that fights all the time, parents have split up. Him leaving his friends, his band. Lovely bones refers to his happiness.

This song was inspired, but not about the book "The Lovely Bones". Josh was going through a lot of loss at that point, and he had the song, sans lyrics in his head. He read the book and it inspired him. The song is about someone who has taken their own life. The lyrics above have a mistake- it's not "Forgot to swallow", it's "About to swallow" which changes the context greatly.
He's a spirit seeing all he's missing since he died.
