I also thinks its about a couple who have had a long distance relationship for awhile. I think the guy has been on tour for awhile and the girl has been awaiting his arrival back home and its the last few days before he gets home and its hurting more than ever because they know how close they are to being with each other again. "the drive home never seemed this long before" is him saying I've driven down this road a million times before,come home after a dozen tours,but this time the trip is so much longer because I finally have something to look forward to. and he's telling her he doesn't know what will happen to them when he gets home,but he's hoping everything is like it was before he left.

Sounds like he's been away for a certain amount of time. They have been away from eachother, and it hasn't been easy on the girl "You said it hurts and you know that I believe you". And it hasn't been easy on him either "Cause I'm a mess and you know that I can't help it".
But he is coming home, and he hopes that she has held on to what they had. And he will make it right with her, and everything will be okay.

I agree with Gnarkill67,
I think it sounds straight forward that this song is about a couple being away from each other for a long amount of time, and it's putting a strain on the relationship but he wants them to make it and for her to be waiting for him when he gets home. And he's hoping she waits on a little longer and is swearing to her that they can make it.
