Took my mind with your malice
It's the final time to go
I was on the corner, running still
Fight the anger, fight the leaves
It was autumn of my love
All the thoughts and moments winding down
So wait, again
Don't find the lies that answer
So wait, again
Don't hurt me by, hurt me by
So make, again
A dime-a-dozen love clichés
And feel the night we sang
October dulls, it dulls too soon
The lonely calling of the cars
Beating their way amongst highways
I'll find my way to them
The smell of memory and touch
Another visceral excuse to take
Another drink alone
So wait, again
Don't find the lies that answer
So wait, again
Don't hurt me by, hurt me by
So make, again
A dime-a-dozen love clichés
And feel the night we sang
Just find the moment
It's not coming back again
Your hair, it danced in summer wind
Just break the surface
I don't really know
The meaning, cause, and attributes of fall
So wait, again
Don't find the lies that answer
So wait, again
Don't hurt me by, hurt me by
So make, again
A dime-a-dozen love clichés
And feel the night we sang
Just find the moment
It's not coming back again
Your hair, it danced in summer wind
Just break the surface
I don't really know
The meaning, cause, and attributes of fall
It's the final time to go
I was on the corner, running still
It was autumn of my love
All the thoughts and moments winding down

It seems that he’s talking about a relationship in terms of seasons—how spring is birth, summer is the prime, autumn is growing old, and winter is death. The relationship isn’t quite dying yet, but it’s definitely losing its steam and the vitality it once had, and he wishes he could recapture what it was like before.
“So make, again A dime-a-dozen love clichés”
There’s something desperate about these lines, as if he’s willing to try anything to save this relationship, even saying cliché romantic phrases in hopes that the words will help them remember and bring that spark back. He’s fighting to keep the relationship alive and well, and there’s something about that which just makes it more heart-breaking in my opinion. He’s not just lying down and accepting it (at least not at first); he’s fighting and trying so hard to make it work, and all his efforts can’t do a thing.
Then there’s the acceptance. “Just find the moment,” he says, still trying, denying the reality, but then he finally realizes: “It’s not coming back again.” I think it’s important that the line “Your hair, it danced in summer wind” is in past tense compared to the other lines—it danced in summer, but no longer does now that it’s autumn, and he knows this.
“I don’t really know The meaning, cause, and attributes of fall”
For such simple lines, there’s SO much going on. The word “fall” works on so many levels. Literally, it can mean the season of fall and their relationship in terms of the season, but it can also be read as the fall into love—and consequently the fall OUT of it. I think they’re possibly the saddest lines in the song, too. He knows something’s wrong, but doesn’t know why it’s happening or what led up to it; he wants to fix it, but doesn’t know how. All he can really do is watch the relationship continue to fall apart.
This has to be one of the most beautiful (and sad) songs I have ever heard. Not only does it just sound great, musically, but the lyrics are strong enough to stand on their own. There’s so much going on, emotionally, and then combined with the imagery and the metaphors of the seasons...gah! Just beautiful. I can't wait for more from this guy.
