basically is the juice worth the squeeze... she's questioning herself. What if she does everything in her power to get what she's reaching for, and when she gets there (if she ever gets there) will she be happy?

What I think this song means is that she doesn’t want to conform, because she might make other people happy but at what cost, her happiness? But that’s just what I think it means! : )
This songs reminds me of when someone goes along in a relationship for the sake of a relationship (romantic, casual, etc.), not necessarily for their own emotional growth and well being. They feign their emotions and ideals to make the other person happy, but at the cost of their personal identity. And perhaps they receive some sort of happiness themselves, but it is of a material nature, such as sexual pleasure, so it conflicts with their soul -- their internal happiness. All the feigning and materialism seems to waste away identity and soul until only bones are left... and doing so also takes a toll on the other person, even if they are 'good as gold,' being sincere and searching for internal happiness. That person's being lugged around in a bag by someone who can't satisfy their own thirst in the middle of the desert... It hurts both people. They both remain lonely in the relationship.
So this song really reminds me of the bible verse Matthew 16:26, to gain the world and lose your soul. I'm not saying its related religiously or even as a reference, but it makes sense. "If I reach the end that justifies the means"...the "end" being death, dying and seeing the life you lived wasnt worth it.
