Mourning Star Lyrics
On the fields you restore your beliefs
Like an old man in church on a Sunday
Crawl the dirt on your elbows and knees
Any minute you know you could die
So come save us turn water to wine
Give me words of unfathomable wisdom
As I'm crossing the enemy's line
Where the wounded and dead show the way
Tell me when the night is gone
Like washed away
Make a wish
Beneath the mourning star
How can there be a reason for war
For the life of a human that suffers
I remember I heard it before
Tell me all when a new day begins
Tell me when the night is gone
Like washed away
Make a wish
Beneath the mourning star
When the victory is won
The old cliché
Underneath the same old mourning star
Like an old man in church on a Sunday
Crawl the dirt on your elbows and knees
Any minute you know you could die
Give me words of unfathomable wisdom
As I'm crossing the enemy's line
Where the wounded and dead show the way
Like washed away
Make a wish
Beneath the mourning star
For the life of a human that suffers
I remember I heard it before
Tell me all when a new day begins
Like washed away
Make a wish
Beneath the mourning star
When the victory is won
The old cliché
Underneath the same old mourning star

Wow no comments for this song? what the hell is wrong with you people? this song is one of the best of the album! I think the song is about the uncertainity of life
I'm fairly sure it's written from a soldier's point of view; many of the lines are about the horrors of war, or the desperation they inspire (cf. the old aphorism "there are no atheists in foxholes".)
"So come save us turn water to wine" --nice biblical reference. :)
definatley about a soldier of some kind. the idea of the soldiers fighting beign a prayer makes me think its not modern soldiers but thats up to interpretation.
otherwise i agree with neo
I think its about life in general and Jesus obviously. How we ask (mourn) and pray to God for help and guidance under the star (when Jesus was born).
Of course Im just pointing out the obvious biblical references, I do agree with the soldier theory as well.
Overall, a kickass song, I love the melody of it.
I also think that this song is about war, and i find it interesting that if you remove one letter from the title (the first "u"), you have something pronounced the same way, but instead of the result of death, mourning, you have a brutal medieval weapon, the Morning Star
Indeed, wars, but I would think about religion wars more than everything else. "How can there be a reason for war / For the life of a human that suffers" ? Isn't that a reference to the Christ ? Further referenced with "You gave the world all this pain." Jesus - a messiah of peace, who brought so many wars... And Mourning Star is a play on words : Morning Star is both the name of a weapon and a nickname for Lucifer - hence the religious part. The soldier who sings those lyrics is a nonbeliever - but in the heat of the battle, the fear of death makes him want to find salvation - so he clings to religion.
