i think its about trying to be what you are not trying to be perfect to impress others and about the realization that its ok to be yourself and to be alone the last verse in the song where it says "beautiful girl sleeps by herself..." is a reflection of realizing that she is fine by herself and doesnt need to be with someone

Hm, I somewhat agree with pinkninja. BUT, it also seems like it could be about making mistakes.

beautiful girl looking her best takes off her towel, puts on a dress fixes her hair to look good for someone waits in the car to go to a motel, to a motel [[This is just describing the situation. In this case it kind of sounds like she's cheating.]]

i may not always be perfect but i'll always try [[This is saying everyone trys to be perfect to avoid doing something wrong, but everyone makes mistakes, even when they try not to or don't mean to.]]

will you say your prayers just to be honest with yourself? will you save your soul is this what you wanted all along? [[I'm not really sure about this part, but it could be about the person not wanting to admit to themselves that they did something they regret. It sounds like they just want to stop feeling guilty but they can't.]]

heirs became bigs who just lie to himself stockmarket falls and he loses it all he sleeps alone for the third time this week knees become numb he just wants this to be (over) wants this to be [[This sounds like the person spends so much time doing work, like so many people do, that he feels like that's only thing he really has and when something goes wrong he loses pretty much the only thing he has.]]

boy on the floor what have you done? head in your hands what have you done? [[The person is finally questioning themselves (or someone is questioning them) about whatever they did. It sounds like they can't really believe they would have done something that bad.]]

beautiful girl sleeps by herself half the beds cold she knows its her fault she's given in and admitted defeat and she'll be fine [[The end of the song seems the person is realizing their mistake, whatever it may have been. They're admiting it's their fault but they know things will get better and life will go on.]]

Either way, this is an amazing song. I agree it's the best off Arrivals & Departures lyrically wise. :]

i hate to say it, but "heirs became bigs who just lie to himself" makes no sense whatsoever. it is actually this:

Yeah, I wonder who posts these lyrics, some of them are way screwed up. It completely throws off the meaning of the song.

okay, i think we can all agree the lyrics posted are insanely wrong. anyways, im pretty sure this song is about a girl cheating on her husband, her husband becomes broke, is aware his wife is cheating, and commits suicide.. (the lyrics are definitely blood on the floor.. NOT boy on the floor.. read the CD booklet.) but yeah she knows part of his downfall is her fault, however, she didn't care about him that much if she cheated on him, so she'll get over it and be fine. hence the title "true romance." and if youve ever listened to this band before it's pretty obvious silverstein considers infidelty and suicide truer than idealistic interpretations of romance.

oh and the prayer part is just the girl aware that what she's doing is wrong, but she's praying instead of taking responsibility for her actions or changing. the part about "is this what you wanted all along" is questioning why she's praying because if she wanted to save her soul she shouldn't commit adultry.

and "i may not always be perfect but i'll always try" is basically saying that the situation the song is about is reality, and happens.. and you should try to be better than that but if you cant be, its okay, but try.. or something of that nature.....

Calling her a "girl" as opposed to woman or any other word suggests that she's very innocent and insecure, which would make her more succeptable to being in one of these relationships. the "blood on the floor" section is about her finally having had enough and killing her boyfriend. however, i think this is more of a vision or idea, rather than what she actually does. In the very last part i think that she has finally ended things with her boyfriend and though she is lonely, she is "fine" for the first time in years.

I asked Shane about this one after the Chicago show, and he said that it was about religious hypocrites, like he knew in college, who sin and sin and do wrong things and then get down on their knees in church and think that makes it all better.
