Your Lips Are Red Lyrics

Your lips are red
My face is red from reading your red lips
My hands are black
My hands are black inside this downtown taxi cab
This cities red
This cities red from riding us into the ground
This cities black
This cities black from all the ashes in downtown
Ashes in downtown, ashes in downtown

My face is drawn
My face is drawn on with this number 2 pencil
Your face is drawn
Your face is drawn from drawing words right from my lips
Words right from my lips, words right from my lips

Your lips are red
My face is red from reading your red lips
My hands are red
My hands are red from sealing your read lips
Sealing your red lips, sealing your red lips

Your skins so fair
Your skins so fair its not fair
You remind me

This song is about a woman: "red lips", "your skin so fair"

It's two women: "my face is drawn with this number 2 pencil"

The song has two opposing emotional moments, and I wonder what exactly St Vincent was thinking of when she wrote them. To the best of my analytic capacities I'm going to say the first moment sounds like she's full of adrenaline or anxiety on meeting this woman (maybe even something darker, the music points that way), whereas in the second part we have the aftermath of that initial feeling and it could be her understanding she's in love or maybe the two of them finally sharing the authenticity in feelings after all that adrenaline etc. Or, else it could be the morning, and she's thinking of what happened during the night (like someone with a hangover thinking about a crazy night for example).

But it's definitely about 2 women. And it's not her only song: think about Chloe in the Afternoon.

I don't get the number 2 pencil thing. I mean I can gather some symbolism if I reach far enough lol but what's your take?

I love the random piano! it's hilarious. but this song is so swell. the first time I heard it I didn't like it, then I listened to it again a few months ago all the way through and that huge climax into the sweet little guitar "Your skin's so fair" part completely captured my heart.

I feel like all the way up to the "Your skin's so fair" section, she's basically throwing down a lover, if that makes sense. She's angry at them and is thinking of everything wrong with that person. Then, she finally remembers something absolutely lovely about that person that is the one thing that captures her heart.

I think this song sorta correlates with Paris Is Burning. I feel like this song deals with crime, race, and struggles of a minority?

"Your face is drawn from words right from my lips." Sounds like she's describing an assailant right?

"This city is red from riding us into the ground." Red as in fire? Like the drama that went down between Algerians and the French Govt?

"Your skin's so fair its not fair." - High class "You remind me of city graffiti" - Low class

I think in this song she might be adressing a lover that has she just realized is cheating on her. "You're lips are red, my face is red from reading your red lips" She (in the literal sense) noticed he had the lipstick of another woman on him lips, and she became furious with him at noticing, hense her face is red.

I'm not quite sure of the lyrics in between the first verses and the last ones, but I think that at the end when she says "You're skin's so fair, it's not fair" she's saying that she thinks the reason her lover cheated on her is because this woman is more beautiful or sexier than she is. Also, when the choir in the background chants "You remind me of city graffiti" it could be reflective of her own thoughts, saying to herself that she must be hideous and ugly and that nobody wants her. That's just my little interpretation, though.

ARE YOU SERIOUS. This has no comments. I will gladly be the first.

The guitar part in this song is so fucking epic. Not to mention the almost random crazy ass piano parts. It is so ridiculously bad ass, I can't even explain...ahhhh She is so good at putting together a ton of parts that seem like they would be super random, but really work together so well.

I need help figuring out what she whispers after saying "You Remind Me" It sounds like City Graffiti, or Sitting Feeling City Graffiti makes much more sense than Sitting Feeling.

Yeah, I saw a live version of this on youtube and she's definitely saying "city graffiti". The is such a great song. I kind of get the image of an innocent girl/boy going to a big city and experiencing/doing new, exciting things. Great for driving at night.
