Start of Something Beautiful Lyrics

Always in my thoughts you are
Always in my dreams you are
I got your voice on tape, I got your spirit in a photograph
Always out of reach you are

Cold inside my arms you are
Simple like a child you are
I remember when you took my hand and led me through the rain
Down inside my soul you are

The more I show the way I feel
The less I find you give a damn
The more I get to know
The less I find that I understand
Innocent, the time we spent
Forgot to mention we're good friends
You thought it was the start of something beautiful?
Well think again.

Mother lost her looks for you
Father never wanted you
I trust to love and then I find you never really felt the same
There's something in your heart so cruel

I think its a basically a story, and yes of love

"Always in my thoughts you are Always in my dreams you are I got your voice on tape I got your spirit in a photograph Always out of reach you are"

I think here he is basically talking about his relationship with his girl who is in complete love over. And i also think in some ways they can't be together out of distance or a schedule, but they are in love,.

"Cold inside my arms you are Simple like a child you are I remember when you took my hand and led me through the rain Down inside my soul you are"

Basically here is an experience with them alone, when he holds her she's cold and he's warming her, shes cute like a child, and she has helped him through some major hard times, and for that a part of her will always be with him

"The more I show the way I feel the less I find you give a damn The more I get to know the less find that I understand Innocent, the time we spent, forgot to mention we're good friends You thought it was the start of something beautiful? Well think again."

Here he transitions, he's realizing that she doesn't really care about him, and the more he finds out about her, the more different she seems to him and he doesn't know her anymore. The time they spent together was pure love, they almost forgot they started out friends. And then he starts to reassure himself, he thought it was the start of something great, but he's realized otherwise.

"Mother lost her looks for you Father never wanted you I trust to love and then I find you never really felt the same There's something in your heart so cruel "

The mother and the father are his, his mother doesn't care about him anymore, his father never did. The one person he trusted was his girl who he loved, he thought love would prevail but she doesn't care about him. And he say's she's cruel in that she led him to believe something different.

Song Meaning

@Lousick Good interpretation but I disagree on the last part. I think the mother and father are still hers. It is because she haven't received love needed from her mother and father, she doesn't trust to love, unlike he.

I am experiencing this song.

I'm not one for the ladies. At all. They basically don't talk to me. I know, I'm only 17, and I shouldn't worry. But the unfortunate reality of this means that as soon as one comes along, I fall for them immediately.

Start of this year, I met a girl. Fantastic girl. Fucking beautiful, much smarter than I, pretty decent music taste. But, because she was way too good for me, I couldn't just ask her out there, so I snuck my way in. I became good friends with her. Really good friends. She basically spend all her time with me and one of my other friends, who already had a girlfriend, so in my mind she was mine.

In my mind we were fucking perfect. I could imagine this fairytale relationship of happiness, because she was one of those girls who I'd rather hug than bone, and I could just imagine this perfect reality in my minds eye. I held onto this dream. It gave me happiness, thinking it may possibly come true. But it was so vivid, I made the stupid decision to try and make it come true.

About a month ago I finally decided to tell her my feelings. To no avail. At first, I wasn't that mad. I mean, she was way too beautiful for me, and she valued my friendship too much. But then I realised. The dream was gone. It was no longer in my mind's eye, because it was now impossible. Before it was improbable, now it's impossible.

This drove me insane. I kept thinking of ways I could get her to change her mind, bring back the dream. I confessed to her again, in more depth, last week.

Nothing.

"The more I show the way I feel, the less I find you give a damn"

This song is my anthem right now. I've told her I can't speak to her any more because I'll go insane. But I really, honestly did think that it was the start of something beautiful.

My Interpretation

You're my hero, LOL. Probably because I fell exactly the same after my gf broke up with me when I was just 17. And even more because you really get the song IMHO. ;)

Just wanted to say that girls go through this too! I went through rejection after rejection during those years.

I guess this song is about a person declaring his love to a girl, probably his close friend, and that love never being returned. Mostly, I think, because she's already dealing with issues of her own "Mother lost her looks for you Father never wanted you".

This song reminds me of my last girlfriend Jamie. I still have feelings for her, but she's moved on (another PT song that reminds me of her). Yay love

"Innocent the time we spent because I met your regal friends" This line is wrong, it should read "Innocent the time we spent forgot to mention we're good friends"

Under the idea that this concept album is chronological, that would mean the girl is already dead. This is him coping with his loss of her. She was the closest thing to -- the only -- love in his life, and the fact that it felt just a tease to him before being wisked away is pain and grief dumped on top of an already loveless life. Obviously there were some complications in his relationship with her, but it's quite obvious she was still a very, very important, if brief part of his life, hence his anguish over her.

Interesting ;)

I agree. It's so sad and depressing, yet so beautiful. One of my favorite tracks off Deadwing. How much better can you get then this?

Incredible song. The piano part in the middle is pure sex. On the other hand, in Porcupine Tree tradition, the lyrics are about unrequited love.
