Irvine Lyrics

Are you there?
Are you watching me?
As I lie here on this floor
They say you feel what I do
They say you’re here every moment
Will you stay?
Stay ‘till the darkness leaves
Stay here with me
I know you’re busy, I know I’m just one
But you might be the only one who sees me
The only one to save me

Why is it so hard?
Why can’t you just take me?
I don’t have much to go
Before I fade completely

Can you feel how cold I am?
Do you cry as I do?
Are you lonely up there all by yourself?
Like I have felt all my life
The only one to save mine

How are you so strong?
What’s it like to feel so free?
Your heart is really something
Your love, a complete mystery to me

Are you there watching me?
As I lie here on this floor
Do you cry, do you cry with me?
Cry with me tonight

Are you there?
Are you watching me?

I got the distinct impression this song is not just about depression or talking to God, but about contemplating suicide. Kelly isn't the kind of person who would actually do something like commit suicide, but I think at her lowest point, she probably was laying there, on the floor, feeling like she wishes her life could just drain out of her so that she didn't have to feel anymore. It's a very personal thing, contemplating ending one's own life, and I can understand why she hasn't come right out in any interviews and admitted that was where her thoughts were at. But to me, the first time I heard the song, I imagined someone laying on a floor after either cutting their wrists or taking a bunch of pills, and waiting for death to come, and having that conversation with God as they waited to die. For her, it was probably an outlet for her morbid thoughts....instead of actually committing that act, she just needed to express those morbid and low feelings. As a songwriter and creative person, writing that song was probably very theraputic because she got to act out in her mind an act she would never actually do, and wallow in her depression a little.

There are a couple lines that support my theory:

"Stay till the darkness leaves"-I think this means stay until she dies "I don't have much to go before I fade completely, can you feel how cold I am?"- this very clearly illustrates suicide in my mind, the life draining out of you

Maybe it's just my take on it, but that was definitely the impression I got from this song, was a person who was committing suicide.

Sofke - kelly said this was like a letter to God at the lowest point of her life. It's called "Irvine" because that was where she wrote it (on the bathroom floor) at the night of her concert in CA.

I get a really depressed mood and it seems like she's asking God to give her strength & be with her during this hard time.

Anone get a suicide-ish view? from the "take me" line? I wish kelly would talk more about it but she's said she'd never really explain what this song is really about.

Kelly wrote this song when she was at her Irvine concert in Irvine, California. That's why she called it Irvine. She was also going through depression at the time, and wrote it in her dressing room before the concert. She said that it is one of the saddest songs she's ever wrote.

yeah, greenchristine, i kind of got that impression the first time I read the lyrics. This song is so sad. I definitely agree that she's asking God for his attention and wondering if he ever feels the same way she does at times.

I don't know if she is talking to god...

I ask myself: why is the song called 'Irvine'? and the line: 'Your love, a complete mystery to me'

maybe it's about a person who she really loves and she can't forget him. He left her, not for someone else just because he couldn't stay with her... he loves her, but he just couldn't be with her.

are you there? are you watching me?

maybe she's watching at the moon and she hopes he looks at it too at the same time and thinks about her...

nvm probably totally wrong...

it's just a great song, something totally not-Kelly, but still... Kelly at her best!

i read in a southern california (orange county) magazine that she titled this song "irvine" because this is how she felt the night she performed here in irvine, ca. she said that it was the lowest time of her life... her feelings were that she was trying to get someone out of her life.

so right on with rayni.

when i first read the lyrics i immediately related. i feel as if this song is about god.
