29 Years Lyrics
Could you tell me the enchantment and say goodbye
I met a girl named disillusionment
Could you tell her I made the headlines
says 'boy draws wings on everything'
Could you tell her to check the headlines
says 'boy finds angels in the river'
You know I dreamed about you
For 29 years before
I saw you
You know I dreamed about you
I missed you for 29 years
Birds are flying out of water
Underneath the sky
I run up to the rainbow girl
just to pass her by
I'll never have a change of heart
My swan will never sing
I have no heart the swan is gone
And now I wear the wings
You know I dreamed about you
For 29 years before
I saw you
You know I dreamed about you
I missed you for 29 years
You know I dreamed about you
For 29 years before
I saw you
You know I dreamed about you
I missed you for 29 years

I can definitely see johnathonfisk's meaning being right, but I also thought about this one.
I think this song is about a man finally meeting his his love at age 29. Throughout his life he has been thinking about that girl, although he never knew who she was. But he knew that he would meet his love eventually, he just never knew when or who it would be.
You know I dreamed about you For 29 years before I saw you You know I dreamed about you I missed you for 29 years
Lots of people dream about their perfect guy/girl before they meet them, and the lyrics fit it perfectly.
I think this is the meaning too, with one exception: not necessarily has he met her at age 29. It could be later: 34 o 35. Even 40 or so, because we tend to remember things from our 5th year of life or even later.

@Miniemetoo -- Thanks for expressing the meaning in this way. I think the other interpretations are valid, but I've always identified with your interpretation. I think of my wife when I hear this song.
We met when I had just turned 30, hence "I dreamed about you for 29 years". Amazingly, when we finally got together (I ended up moving across the country for her), it really felt like I missed her for all the years of my life before then.

@Miniemetoo This is a great interpretation of this part of the lyrics and I totally relate to that. But I think it contradicts the rest of the lyrics, which is definitely about realizing that the girl he once knew (29 years ago) was the one and he was dreaming about her ever since he left her.

Are you sure the lyric isn't "My swan will never sing" - "I have no heart, the swan is gone, and now I wear the wings" ?
And as for the comment above, branch out from Boxer a little and you'll know this is NOT Slow Show.
Is that supposed to be a record player skipping in this song?
No, it's a guitar scratched with a fork.
Could you tell her I made the headlines says 'boy draws wings on everything'
^ Why is that so awesome
hamlet. people discussed this a bit on the slow show page, but it makes even more sense listening to this song. hamlet is 29, he is singing to Ophelia, the swan who dies in the river. and what better word can be used to describe the Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia than disillusionment?
and then these lyrics are used for Slow Show on Boxer, which is really an album that hopes to define the feeling of being unsatisfied, disillusioned and inadequate.
Firstly I like Johnathanfisks interpretation, and i used to think the same as Miniemetoo.
I always thought it was 'could you tell lady enchantment I said goodbye- i met a girl called disillusionment'
I think that this is a song ultimately about regret... he misses lady enchantment because he is now with 'a girl called disillusionment'. He is still in love with L.E. as 'I run up to the rainbow girl just to pass her by' but at the same time for one reason or another, he feels bound to stay with the other girl,or maybe like Ophelia, his ideal woman is dead, 'but I'l never have a change of heart' and therefore 'my swan will never sing' (or maybe like Ophelia she is dead). his further regret 'I have no heart, my swan is gone'. All he has left is the dreams of the the woman he loves 'and now I wear the wings'. By comparing himself to the swan he is showing his own imaginary world, the association between the wings and flying insinuates that he still dreams of this girl, even though he dreamt about her for 29 years'.
I think the part of the song that is repeated in boxer is showing that he has over come his regret and disillusionment, as this can be interpreted differently without the context of the rest of the song (29 years, not slow show). In slow show I think Miniemetoo's interpretation is correct.

isn't this slow show?
It's the same lyrics in the chorus as the end part of Slow Show, but this is from their debut self titled album. They put some old lyrics in the song. Boxer was the first of their albums I listened to (only got into them recently) and then I went and listened to some of their other stuff, and I realised on listening to Boxer again that they'd done this. I think it's pretty cool actually!

@anise These lyrics are so great that I'm not surprised at all they used them again.

it's interesting that he repeats these lyrics for Boxer, i'm sure there is some sort of symbolic progression there but I'm too lazy right now to think of it.
@BabyBritian I think he just decided this piece of lyrics is too great to be left buried on the debut album that not many people would ever listen to. And I agree. This is the greatest piece of love poetry I've ever read.

I'm glad he did repeat the lyrics in Slow Show, they sound sooo much better in that song.
