Nineteen Lyrics

I felt you in my legs
Before I ever met you
And when I lay beside you
For the first time I told you

I feel you in my heart
And I don't even know you
And now we're saying bye, bye, bye
And now we're saying bye, bye, bye
I was nineteen, call me

I felt you in my life
Before I ever thought to
I felt the need to lay down
Beside you and tell you
I feel you in my heart
And I don't even know you
And now we're saying bye, bye, bye
And now were saying bye, bye, bye

I was nineteen
Call me
I was nineteen
Call me

Flew back home to where we met
Stayed inside I was so upset
Cooked up a plan for so good except
I was all alone you were all I had
Love me
You were all mine
Love me
I was your's right?
I was your's right?

I was nineteen
Call me
I was nineteen
Call me

To me, this song is about looking back on your first great love. They will always have a place in your heart... but you were young.. and you have since moved on and away. ("flew home back to where we met") Part of the song is reliving how you left and moved on... said goodbye to something that was once so important to you on your path to growing up. In many ways, you're still insecure about what you had back then, wondering if it had the same importance in their life as yours. But you've grown up. You don't even know the person anymore ("I feel you in my heart, and I don't even know you") You know that you've changed so much, and they have too. Part of you wants to reconnect, but the other (larger?) part of you knows that who you were back then was so different than you are now. You've changed so much from the scared girl who clung to someone because she felt so alone... I know I have. This song is absolutely beautiful and it means so much to me. To me, it is about looking back on the journey to where you are now... and wondering about someone who was once so important in your life. Also, wondering if it was ever real, or if you were too young and too screwed up when you still lived in your hometown to have anything real.

This is perfect, What you said makes so much sense in relation to the song.

I feel like along with the long-lasting relationship, there's a moment of sexual realization. There's hints of a confused person thinking back on the girl/boy and the moment that led him/her at age nineteen (an age many people are finishing their first year of college) to explore/discover/accept this queer sexuality that they "felt in their legs and heart" "calling" for them long before they met/knew/named it. Maybe it wasn't meant to have that element but the emphasis on uniqueness and pained inevitability makes it feel like something beyond just a deep romantic relationship.

My Interpretation

"I felt you in my legs before I even met you"

Funny. I never thought of Tegan as overtly sexual. Anybody else think that maybe she meant something other than feeling (her) between her legs? Maybe the girl made her weak in the knees? Maybe the girl made her stay rooted to the spot w/ shock...?

This song is definitely about a first. Maybe love. Maybe it has to do w/ sex. She's remembering a person that impacted her greatly when she was nineteen. Just my opinion anyways.

I love that interpretation. Because yes, I thought of the obvious meaning when I first heard it, but after reading this it could be either one.

maybe this says something about me... but i swear, over all these years, i've never once thought of this sexually.

I know it sounds weird, but the first time I heard that song i thought its meaning is about motherhood.

"I felt you in my legs before i ever met you" matches to the relationship between a mother and her unborn child.

"and now we're saying bye, bye, bye" could describe the situation when her child is grown up (or dead? a stillborn?)

with the line "I was nineteen" she remembers the pregnancy when she was nineteen.

P.S.: I'm a man and not pregnant. And I know the actual meaning won't be about motherhood (since tegan and sara are both homosexual).

Song Meaning

I think it's probably about a fling between two people who don't know eachother. And of them is heart broken when over. Brilliant song with brilliant lyrics. I love Tegan and Sara. =]

"i felt you in my legs before i ever met you"

i think that they're intentions weren't sexual at all. it was meant that it was like a nervous feeling when you lust after the person you just met. kinda like Shaggy from Scooby Doo when he gets nervous or scared. idk i could be wrong but just rememeber she says, i felt you IN my legs..not i felt you IN BETWEEN mys legs..

I guess I'm the only one who thinks this song is about a miscarriage

I'm retarded I meant "And one of them is heart broken when it's over."

I think it's about when you first meet a person and feel so deeply about them without any real reason. It sounds like they talked, were intimate, but she doesn't know if she took it too seriously. "I was yours right?" is like she's asking this relationship wasn't just something I blew up, was it? We were together, right, even if it wasn't made official? Then they just fell apart without any words or warning. She fell apart.

sooo... Tegan has said that she used the number nineteen in a metaphorical sense...she was actually writing about feeling 19 again...and falling in love at the age of 26...which she apparently didn't think could happen.

after listening to this song a million plus 5 times, i think that it's simply about meeting someone and finding yourself deeply connected to them...and it all happening very fast. then they have to part ways and neither knows where the relationship is going.

btw, the drums in this song are AMZING!!! thumbs-up

i know, i love the drums in this song. i always kind of air drum along, especially at the beginning after "before i ever met you"
