When Anger Shows Lyrics

It creeps all over you like a dull ache
Think of all the things your hands could make
It pulls you to the ground like soaking wet gloves
The change in your face when anger shows

In that moment you realise
That something you thought would always be there will die
Like everything else

These thoughts I must not think of
Dreams I cant make sense of
I need you to tell me its ok
These thoughts I must not think of
Dreams I cant make sense of
I need you to tell me its ok

You are a sleeping lion in your bed
I will not wake you
You're the moment
Love has passed
We all must learn to hate you
You're a memory from before
Please don't let me forget you
You're the wolves at my door

In that moment you realise
That something you thought would always be there will die
Like everything else

These thoughts I must not think of
Dreams I cant make sense of
I need you to tell me its ok
These thoughts I must not think of
Dreams I cant make sense of
I need you to tell me its ok

How can you know what things are worth
If your hands wont move to do a days work?
How can you know what things are worth
If your hands wont move to do a days work?
How can you know what things are worth
If your hands wont move to do a days work?
How can you know what things are worth
If your hands wont move to do a days work?
How can you know what things are worth
If your hands wont move to do a days work?
How can you know what things are worth
If your hands wont move to do a days work?
How can you know...

These thoughts I must not think of
Dreams I cant make sense of
I need you to tell me its ok
These thoughts I must not think of
Dreams I cant make sense of
I need you to tell me its ok

I believe the song is specifically about death.

"It creeps all over you like a dull ache" - The moment death comes to a person. "Think of all the things your hands could make" - All the things you couldve done with your life. "It pulls you to the ground like soaking wet gloves" Everyone's ultimate destiny, the ground. "The change in your face when anger shows" - He becomes angry when he comes to the realization we all come to at some point of our lives that...

"In that moment you realize that Something you thought would always be there Will die like everything else"- ...we all must die.

"These thoughts I must not think of Dreams I can't make sense of I need you to tell me it's okay These thoughts I must not think of Dreams I can't make sense of I need you to tell me it's okay" - He is so distraught by the thought of life ending that he knows he shouldn't let it control his life but it's even in his dreams. And he must be comforted even if its by lies, "I need you to tell me it's okay".

"You are a sleeping lion In your bed I will not wake you" - Death is unpredictable like a lion, it can strike at any moment. "You're the moment love has passed We all must learn to hate you" - Death is not touched by love as if it has been "passed", and eventually we all become acquainted with it quickly learning to hate it. "You're a memory from before Please, don't let me forget you You're the wolves at my door" - Now that he's realized that death will eventually come and attack like "wolves" that have waiting for him, he doesnt want to forget that realization.

"How can you know what things are worth if your hands won't move to do a days work?" - Even though he won't allow death to control his life, his consciouness of his inevitable end will drive him to do the most with his life and not to sit around, not moving, not knowing how precious life really is despite its brevity.

My Interpretation

i think this song is written about someones battle with anger problems , i think whoever wrote this has overcome anger issues quote: In that moment you realise That something you thought would always be there will die Like everything else

i think this is the moment he has overcome his anger issues and realises how bad they weresomeone who thought they would never go away , my personal opinion

I think it is about anger issues too.

"think all the things your hands could make"

"How can you know what things are worth If your hands wont move to do a days work?"

is talking about how when you're angry you break things which is a waste when you really could be doing something useful. and how when you mature you see that things are hard to earn for and you take better care of them.

"it creeps all over you like a dull ache it pulls you to the ground like soaking wet gloves"...

Dealing with the passing away of a person who worked hard all their life.

Best song on the new album, in my opinion.

current favorite song from the new album.

"These thoughts I must not think of Dreams I can't make sense of I need you to tell me it's okay"

that part just breaks my heart, cos I keep thinking about a friend of mine in a way that I really shouldn't cos I know he doesn't think of me in that way, and yet I want him to tell me that it's alright, even if he's turning me down.... beautiful song.

Have to change my mind on interpretation... "nickitwins" - I think you may have nailed it on the head! "your a sleeping lion in your bed I will not wake you" kinda says it all... This person has conquered anger and doesn't want to wake it back up, however; it will always be there... "You're the wolves at my door"

This song reminds me of a book I read, called 'Solaris'. It's a story about a guy whose wife commits suicide, and ten years later, he goes to this planet which basically recreates her from his memories and thoughts. She, and the guilt, start making life difficult for the guy, and, besides, they are sort of tied together so he can't go far away from her. He knows he must get rid of her, but can't do it because he still loves her. I don't think Tom read the book or anything, but maybe he did mean an emotional struggle a bit like the one in it? Maybe it's about loving someone who, for some reason, you are forbidden to, and don't want to, love? A sort of criminal, maybe? He's obviously comforted by her, and, at the same time, feels endangered and repulsed by her presence in his life. Still, he knows he could never let go. By the way, I LOVE this song! Is it my imagination, or does Tom's voice sound especially sexy in it...?!

This is one of the better songs on An end has a start if not the best. I think it's about someone about to die, death seems to be the overall theme of this album. The person is trying to die thinking positively and not die with all these bitter feelings. Just my interpretation.

Hmm well while some of the interpretations you all mentioned seem quite interesting, the feeling i get from this is a bit different. Someone else picked up on the whole dealing with anger issues, I think this might have to do with an abusive situation? Perhaps an abusive parent or relative?

The lines that clinch it for me are when he says, 'the change in your face when anger shows' and 'think of all the things your hands could make'---It sounds like someone who gets to anger pretty quickly and this is a friend or relative (or maybe also a victim) who is recalling that person, and telling them what a waste it was---their hands, instruments for making things, used to hurt and inflict pain instead.

Other parts of the lyrics that sort of point to that is the whole dreams that he's trying to forget---maybe the childhood abuse?

It might be that this abuser has died yet the memories just keep coming back---the dreams, the wolves at the door, and 'we all must learn to hate you'---perhaps a family trying to deal with moving on from a life of pain?

However, the 'how can you know what things are worth if your hands won't move to do a day's work' part stumps me as it doesn't fit in with the rest of the song---unless its some sort of memory he has of his father complaining that he doesn't work? I don't know, a bit of a long shot. It also happens to be one of my most favourite lines from any song. I love the lyrics in almost all Editors' songs (along with their sound obviously). It's a shame more people don't know about them.
