My Little Japanese Cigarette Case Lyrics

It's just my Japanese cigarette case,
bring a mirror to my face
let all my memories be gone

Bring me my Japanese cigarette case,
bring a mirror to my face,
oh, let all my memories be gone

Bring me my Japanese cigarette case,
break a mirror to my face
oh, let all my memories be gone

It's just my Japanese cigarette case,
bring a mirror to my face
let all my memories be gone

the first thing everyone's mind seems to jump to when a song is cryptic is that it must be about drugs. i really don't think that' the case with this song.

i'm reading Chronicles by Bob Dylan and i just got to a part where he's talking about his uncles who fought in WWII and they all brought back various things-- one being a Japanese cigarette case. He also says that all his uncles carried on with civilian life like nothing ever happened.

I had a eureka moment, because i realized this clicks PERFECTLY with this song.

The case is a memento from war, and he wants to block out all his memories of battle. When you look in the mirror you think about who you are, and particularly disturbing experiences in war would have to be so tied in with the soldier's identity from that point on. I just picture the veteran staring himself down and trying to make that part of him disappear.

It's definitely not a stretch to imagine that Brit Daniels has read Chronicles either, so that further backs up my idea. Any thoughts anyone?

I have no idea what this song means & I guess no one else does either........except another fan & I kinda think it's about escaping reality with drugs, just put very cleverly & simply.

"Bring a mirror to my face" sounds like a very clear allusion to cocaine use, especially when followed by "oh, let all my memories be gone." Mirrors are a traditional surface to break up coke on.

it's got to be about drugs. a mirror to his face? Spoon is my favorite band recording today, so i'd like to think Britt Daniel isn't a cokehead. this song, however, speaks volumes. what a shame.

There isn't much to work with but I'd say this song is obviously bout drugs.

Japanese cigarette case is obviously where someone (britt?) used to keep his stash.

Bring a mirror to my face implies that its cocaine or possibly heroin.

Let all my memories be gone implies the escape from reality that has made drugs so popular.

Great song though I love it.
