Speak Low If You Speak Love Lyrics

Whisper softly softly in my ear
Say all the things I want to hear
So speak low, if you speak love

Oh baby baby drink the poison
We can disappear, away, away from here
Can you hear?
Whisper softly in your ear,
We will never, ever know
Cause our love was always a secret

I say those god damn kids got nothing on me
They just laugh and dance at insecurities
Well I know who I am
Do you know who I am?

Oh baby baby drink the poison
We can disappear, away, away from here
Can you hear?
Whisper softly in your ear,
We will never, ever know
Cause our love was always a secret

Tell me, can you hear
Whisper softly in your ear,
We will never, ever know
Cause our love was always a secret

I say those god damn kids got nothing on me
I say those god damn kids got nothing on me
Cause I know who I am
Do you know, who I am?
I say those god damn kids got nothing on me
I say those god damn kids got nothing on me
Well I know who I am
And You'll never know who I am

Can you hear
Whisper softly in your ear,
We will never, ever know
Cause our love was always a secret

Can you hear
Whisper softly in your ear,
We will never, ever know
Cause our love was always a secret

Tell me, can you hear
Whisper softly in your ear,
We will never, ever know
Cause our love was always a secret

I don't understand why everything in the world has to be Romeo and Juliet style. I mean... The song has hints of anger/regret/jealousy in it. Not just in the lyrics, but in the music itself, and his voice. I think it's about being with someone who's ashamed of you. Those god damn kids got nothin' on me. Meaning that they don't have anything I don't, so why be ashamed of who I am? 'Cause I know who I am. Do you know who I am? Well I know who I am, and you'll never know who I am. Also supports that. He sounds cocky when he sings that part. As if he's calling her out. Saying to the world that she was in love with him, there is no reason to hate her for it. If you do, oh well. And that because she was ashamed, now even if she's not she's not getting a chance to hold his heart. (Because people are dumb sometimes. Him refers to the perspective of the song, not the person who wrote, or is singing it.) I don't know, that's just what I got/get from the song.

basically i think this song about a young love, much like that of romeo and juliet, "Oh baby baby drink the poison We can disappear, away, away from here".

"Cause our love was always a secret."

their love for eachother was not accepted and the only way they could be together was to "disappear".

A great song I could listen to it over and over again.

a man convinving his woman to commit suicide with him because of what he did. or poison could mean dirt (like 'he got dirt on me') so take the slander and go to court because there is no evidence

I thought it was whisper something softly in my ear not softly softly...anyways this is one of my favorite songs from my american heart. Its fast and exciting definitley agree with some that it has a slight romeo juliet feel but some of the other lyrics don't match besides that part so I am not sure.

My Opinion

probably does relate to romeo and juliet, although "speak low if you speak love" is a quote from Shakespeare's 'much ado about nothing', so this whole song is probably supposed to be like love scenes in these 2 plays maybe. "our love was always a secret" is similar to two characters relationships in much ado. amazing song

I agree with TheNeutralOne. Romeo and Juliet was supposed to be romantic, (Maybe that's why I thought it was such an awful story.) this song doesn't have the same feel at all. It sounds like he is or has fallen out of love with her because of her insecurities about being with him. "I say those god damn kids got nothing on me Well I know who I am And You'll never know who I am

Can you hear Whisper softly in your ear, We will never, ever know Cause our love was always a secret"

Like he's saying they could have been something more if she wasn't ashamed. Now they'll never know. He doesn't care about what people think, unlike her.

I Agree With TheNeutralOne And MusicJunkie For The Most Part, The Song To Me Is About How She Was Ashamed About There Love, He Doesnt Care What Others Think, He Just Wanted To Love Her, But She Cares What Others Will Think If It Wasnt A Secret, So She Left Him For Another, Someone That Others Would Approve Of. So He Is Jealous That The Other Guy Is Allowed To Be Open About It. While He Had To Hide It, And "Whisper Softly" So No One Would Know.

This Song Relates To Me Alot, As I am/have Been, In The Same Situation.
