Looking Over My Shoulder Lyrics

Wiped out in the city slick
Another sick rock 'n' roller acting like a dick
Waving cash
Burning through the trash
That piles up in this place,
And fills up behind my empty face,
Full of things that I'm not to do

You come over with all of your friends,
And all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm looking over my shoulder,
Booking away, with nowhere to go

I run down to the corner lot
It's forty-five past two;
I almost forgot to show
Got a date to make ,with Mr. So-and-So,
After which
I won't care when you all start to bitch and moan
About being alone

You come over with all of your friends,
And all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Booking away with nowhere to go

Well, can't you just leave me alone?
You've already thrown all the sticks and stones
You had to send my way
Well, can't you just leave it at that?
And spare us both the bother
Because I just bounce back anyway

I got nothing that I want to do
More than make another sonic "fuck you" to play
Whenever you make my life cliche
So to fit in some little box with the all the lame bullshit
You say to keep confusion away

You come over with all of your friends
And all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Booking away with nowhere to go

You come over with all of your friends
And all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm looking over my shoulder
Booking away

i think this is another one of those songs like everbody cares, everbody understands, where he expresses his hate for his so called 'friends' trying to force him into rehab

I think this song corresponds to a period when he knew he was in a huge shame-spiral and was so fucking apathetic to the point that he felt okay about becoming a parady of himself. It wreaks of shameless, pointless defiance. Not the height of his artistry by far. Just a lower than low point.

It has been confirmed by Larry crane that the actual lyric is Sonic not Sonnet.

I believe this song is in reference to his relationship with a particular record company that he may have been with at the time that he may have been in disagreement with... being told what he can and can't do....and being unable to go anywhere else...other than of course drugs, after which, he won't care when the people in the studio or the people associated with the record company bitch and moan. I got nothing that I want to do More than make another Sonic fuck you to play Whenever you make my life cliche sonic is another word for sound So he wants nothing more that to make another "fuck you" kind of song for the company to play....they are making his life cliche by telling him what to do, or sing about. Why can't you just leave it at that And spare us both the bother Cuz I just bounce back anway again in reference to possibly the company telling him he needs to straighten out a bit but they need to just leave it at that because he is just going to bounce back to drugs anyway...just my interpretation...who really knows...i feel it's kind of sad to even try and interpret what was going on in such a beautiful song writers mind...there are things about him no one will know, nor do they have the right to....he was just a person like anyone else.

A great stand-out song from New Moon. Like all of Elliott's best work, this played in my head for days. One of the reasons he was such a great, great artist is his ability to perfectly marry music and words. He creates beautiful melodies to capture your heart AND biting lyrics that capture your head. Throughout the song he tells a story, expressing a point of view which, lyrically, he gradually builds. I just love the line: "...in some little box with the all the labeled shit/You would say to keep confusion away..." it's so weary and full of righteous indignation. The strength of his songwriting lends it an almost literary authority. This guy was born to be an artist.

it's funny how clear and straight-forward elliott's voice is in this song and yet i'm not sure of the lyrics, are these correct?

It's astonishing how he stays almost completely calm while singing this, yet have such angry lyrics. Haunting. My absolute favorite off of New Moon.

I believe there's a heavy drug reference in the "corner lot" part.

2:45 is the time he agreed to meet his dealer at. Mr. So and So is the dealer. He justifies his drug use because people are always "bitching at him"

And just to throw in my interpretation of this, I believe that he says "I got nothin' that I wanna do, more than make another SONNET, fuck you!"

i'm pretty sure "made up shit" should be "lame bullshit." not sure what to think about the "fuck you" line, but i always say "sonic." other than that, great song.

Ok, now that we're able to edit again...

I made necessary changes, but I still stand by "sonic fuck you"
