Pretty Girl from Chile Lyrics

I'm no more than a friend, girl
I can see that you need more
My boots are on my feet now
My bag is by the door

And the love and the attention
That you need and ask me for
Are weakened by my actions
And lies that I have told

I'm scared to think that I've abandoned you
I'd like to say that I'm a faithful man but it may not be true

And my heart is like a mason's
Hands of weathered skin
Each scar makes it harder
For me to hurt again

I'm scared to think that I've abandoned you
I'd like to say that I'm a faithful man but it may not be true

Gabriella, the things that I tell ya
Are all meant to help ya
Are they working out
Have I gone, have I gone and failed ya
Gabriella, have I let you down?

Gabriella, the things that I tell ya
Are all meant to help ya
Are they working out
Have I gone, have I gone and failed ya
Gabriella, have I let you down?

Only one comment, really?? This song is amazing.

I love when Gabriella leaves the message on the answering machine. so good.

Aw! this much honesty is soooooo moving .. love it ! Gabriella's voice on the answerign machine is perfect .. she sounds so candid .. I dont get everything she says ( could anyone help here please ?) ... and the screams right after the message ... well the whole progression of the music is perfect ... this song is perfect !

"Hey scott this is gabriella how are you hey i read that song you write.. laughs you're silly you didn't abandon me or anything like that I guess people do whatever they need to to get going, you know? But I'm fine.. i've actually been doing really well lately... so just that i hope you're fine too and everything is great. okay, take care, ciao.""

This song itself is one of his lies. Not one of the lies he's told Gabriella, but an attempt to lie to himself. He is trying to convince himself that he is only a friend, while yearning for so much more. He lacks trust in himself though because of his scarred up heart. She has managed to get through all those scars, but ultimately can't penetrate his own doubts. Hearing her nonchalantly confirm that everything is ok, washing over all the intensity they shared together, utterly dismissing it - she is lying too, he knows it, it is like a mirror held up to him suddenly that he can't face because it exposes his own lies... he abandoned her and his own heart. And then the music turns to raw, painful rage at the end. Those feelings that can't even be put into words.

Or maybe that's just where I'm at in my life. The magic of the Avetts.
