So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
the rain has finally stopped
but the land is still wet
and we're all feeling sick now
we aren't used to the solid ground yet
I cleaned the shit off the deck of the ark
for nearly a year
I don't know what I'm gonna do now
that we've ended up here
Noah, what can I do?
everyone's happy but I'm a fool
Noah, don't you remember me?
I kept the boat clean for you
it was a horrible job
but I was so scared that I'd get left behind
I wish I'd seen this coming now
but hope left me blind
and when the third dove comes with its olive branch
it craps on my head
when we sight land everyone cheers and cheers
but I cry instead
Noah, what can I do?
everyone's happy but I'm a fool
Noah, have you forgotten me?
because I kept your boat clean for you
this is my first and last cry for help
even a decksweep has his pride
would you care if I slit my throat in your promised land?
hey Noah, would you know if I died?
so Noah, this note's for you
I may be redundant but I am still true
and Noah you have forgotten me
but I kept the goddamn boat clean for you
but the land is still wet
and we're all feeling sick now
we aren't used to the solid ground yet
I cleaned the shit off the deck of the ark
for nearly a year
I don't know what I'm gonna do now
that we've ended up here
Noah, what can I do?
