Cherry Lyrics
her name is cherry, we just met
but already she knows me better than you
she understands me
after 18 years
and you still don't see me
like you ought to do
maybe we could talk 'bout things
if you was made of wood and strings
while I love her every sound
I don't know how to tune you down
you're so thick and my patience thin
so I got me a new best friend
with a pickup that puts you to shame
and cherry is her name
and when I'm lonely, cherry's there
and she plays along while I sing out my blues
I could be crying and you don't care
you won't call me back you're stubborn as a mule
maybe we could talk 'bout things
if you was made of wood and strings
you must think I've gone too far
I'm talking 'bout my new guitar
but already she knows me better than you
she understands me
after 18 years
and you still don't see me
like you ought to do
maybe we could talk 'bout things
if you was made of wood and strings
while I love her every sound
I don't know how to tune you down
you're so thick and my patience thin
so I got me a new best friend
with a pickup that puts you to shame
and cherry is her name
and she plays along while I sing out my blues
I could be crying and you don't care
you won't call me back you're stubborn as a mule
maybe we could talk 'bout things
if you was made of wood and strings
you must think I've gone too far
I'm talking 'bout my new guitar

I love this song. I think she's talking about how she can spill out her problems to her guitar, by writing a song about what she's feeling. It's easier for her to express her feelings. Things that are so hard to say, come out so easy when she is singing them and playing her guitar.
its about not being able to express her feelings, to her best friend. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gCPeEbyzgXY skip to 9:33 she explains it :)
Why has nobody commented on this? It's such a good song :) Though it's quite self-explanatory, I really like some bits of the lyrics, like this one:
'while I love her every sound I don't know how to tune you down you're so thick and my patience thin'
Amy is such a talented singer :)
erm read it again "I'm talking 'bout my new guitar"

This is one of the greatest songs in Frank but not the best. This song obviously means that the guy that she is with treats her wrong but she doesn't realize it untill she get her brand new guitar (Which is Cherry) as the lyrics say "maybe we could talk 'bout things if you was made of wood and strings" she is wanting to leave her man for the guitar. With Cherry she doesn't want her man to think she is obsessed or crazy says the lyrics "you must think I've gone too far I'm talking 'bout my new guitar"
There's nothing "unconsciously" lesbian about it; it's obviously a tease to the man she's singing to: suggesting that she's found a hot new girlfriend with a pickup that puts his to shame. In the end she comes clean and admits it's her new guitar.
"After eighteen years And you still don't see me Like you ought to do"
It's like she's talking to her mother not to a boyfriend.
Great song!
Its not about a boyfriend, its easy to assume it is but she didnt have the same boyfriend for 18 years, she wrote the album around 5 years before she died at 27yo. I agreed with jb4480 about her mum or a relative but in the outube link posted by ayor she talks (mumbles) about a best friend in absence of touring. Though the song suggests the person she can't talk to is too thick to understand and not absent. This is one of my favourite tracks from her, i just wish it wasnt on the tail end of the 'you sent me flying' track, cus i hate that song lol
