Ever Present Past Lyrics

I’ve got too much on my plate
Don’t have no time to be a decent lover
I hope it isn’t too late
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
My ever present past

I’ve got too much on my mind
I think of everything to be discovered
I hope there’s something to find
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
My ever present past

The things I think I did
I do, I think I did
The things I think I did
When I was a kid

I couldn’t understand a word that they were saying
But still I hung around and took it all in
I wouldn’t join in with the games that they were playing
It went by, it went by, in a flash
It flew by, it flew by, in a flash

There’s far too much on my plate
Don’t have no time to be a decent lover
I hope it’s never too late
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
My ever present past

The things I think I did
I do, I think I did
The things I think I did
When I was a kid
When I was a kid

The lyrics printed at the top of this thread aren't precisely what we hear on the recording by Paul McCartney in this obviously self-referential song. Sometimes it goes simply "I dee I dee [my spelling phonetic] I did" unlike what's printed here. I've often poked around the internet for comment about "I dee I dee I did" in this song, but nowhere have I found comment. I continue to wonder about my idea that it's a pun on "I.D." as in identification. Hence, the whole line means something like "My identity equates to what I did," couldn't we say?

My Interpretation

@DonnyYork I think McCartney is spelling out did. "I d - I - d I did."

I have a feeling this song has to do with his youth, and experience with the Beatles. His trying to express his feelings towards it. I personally think, this song is remarkable. Maybe he thought that fame would last forever. Now that he gets back, he notices where he is now and how fast time flies.

I think this has a lot to do with the Beatles and Linda. It's like he took the time for granted, and "went along" with everything that he forgot to do what he wanted. Now there's so much he wants to do that he is kinda of lost, and hopes there is time to make up for it.
