This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

I've been puzzled over this song for a while and I think it's about time passing and then suddenly realizing that you might have wasted that time or realized you want something different for your future instead of the direction you're heading now. The lyrics are an internal dialog to represent that panic. "It's your responsibility to do something about it" your subconscious says to yourself. <br /> <br /> But if you want to think politically, it's about a nation. And everyone wants to put the future and the responsibility of said future on everyone else. Everyone wants to say what needs to happen but no one wants to be the one to act or to make a change.
