I cannot believe that there are no comments here. Goddamn, this a great fucking song.
I, personally, take the song's meaning like this – you lost loved ones and the only way to be with them again is to die yourself. "You wanna swim with us, you gotta get to the water," and "So put a coin inside your mouth" (Reminds me of passage across the river Styx into the Underworld, Hades) & "Wade out to your knees / You crumble down and give yourself to the sea".
That's just my opinion. But it's absolutely one of my favorite songs.
Now that you mention it, it does sound a lot like someone passing on, and others wanting to join them.
A lot like that, I never thought about that before.
I always took the like "You wanna swim with us, you gotta get to the water" to be something about a new way of thinking. Like, if you want to argue with or argue for a certain cause, you damn well better be educated enough on whatever you're talking about.
