Wicked Twisted Road Lyrics

My first love was a wicked twisted road
I hit the million mile mark at seventeen years old
I never saw the rainbow much less a pot of gold
yeah my first love was a wicked twisted road

my first love was a castle in the sky
I never thought I'd make it 'till I had the guts to try
and I sat up in my tower while the whole world passed me by
yeah my first love was a castle in the sky

my first love was a fearless drive in rain
scared to death I thought I'd never see her face again
they say god was crying so I guess he felt my pain
yeah my first love was a fearless drive in rain

my first love was a wild sinful night
I ran out with the big dogs guess I had more bark then bite
even thought I won the battle in the end I lost the fight
yeah my first love was a wild sinful night

my first love was an angry painful song
I wanted one so bad I went and did everything wrong
a lesson in reality would come before too long
yeah my first love was an angry painful song

My first love was a wicked twisted road
I hit the million mile mark at seventeen years old
I never saw the rainbow much less a pot of gold
yeah my first love was a wicked twisted road

my first love was a wicked twisted road

"My first love was a wicked, twisted road."

Isn't everyone's?

This is a magnificent song. Self-explanatory. Perhaps that's why no comments yet.

It's about first love. How invincible you feel because you're young and ignorant. You think it'll last forever. Or you don't even think in those terms. You're livin' and lovin' until one day you're faced with reality of the relationship being over.

It's about allt he mistakes that were made and how you know better now, but it's too late.

I take a completely different meaning from this song than most. I think he's talking about his own life: what he wanted to accomplish at different points of time, and how his expectations for each of those moments were ultimately not met; at least partially because he was unable to ever truly give his love to others. The song ends the same way it started, implying that the first decision led him down the path of his own demise.

Wicked twisted road literally refers to his desire to leave town. The lyrics make sense, specifically because the age mention. The road/traveling was tiring and was never as fulfilling as he had originally hoped.

Castle in the sky refers to his desire to become famous. He was able to do this, but missed out on other things as a result; namely love/family.

Wild sinful night is pretty self explanatory if you take it literally. The late nights were about the thrill of the night rather than a sustainable future. The late nights became old and he couldn't find love while balancing his desire to live for the night.

Fearless driving rain is the most difficult, but I believe this is where he finally found love and possibly even started a family with that person. I think fearless driving rain is also fairly literal and refers to his uneasiness with how repetitive his life had become on a day to day basis. As a result, he created relationship battles out of thin air and would frequently “storm out of the house”. One evening, when he left, there was a 'fearless driving rain’. In that moment, he was scared to lose his life and ultimately his love. Unfortunately, he was never able to reconcile the relationship.

Angry painful song is both literal and literalistic. Literalistic: He ultimately never found love/had a family which in a sense, he desired by leaving town in the beginning of the song. It's also why the first verse is repeated at the end of the song. He ultimately regrets at least some of the things he did. Literal: He had never had as big of a song as he wanted to and felt that it was because of the decisions he had made earlier in his life. Ironically, this was their biggest song as a group and likely will be forever because it is based on his experiences/regret.

The first verse is repeated because it was the turning point that ultimately affected all the other decisions he made and brought him to this point.

Song Meaning

Reckless Kelly told us the funniest story about this song at a performance in Rifle, CO.

They said that they submitted this song for their first album after signing a new record deal. Their record company liaison “allegedly” listened to all of the songs they submitted and told them that they were all terrible, including this song. So… Reckless Kelly submitted an entirely new set of songs and this song was left off the first album per the liaison's “alleged” opinion. On one of the next album submissions, Reckless Kelly sneakily re-added this song to the submission list. The SAME liaison listened to the submitted songs and not 10 minutes later, he called them to say, “That's the best fucking song you've ever written...”

Such a great story and I'm very thankful that they resubmitted the song.
