Oh yeah, oh yeah, I’ve fallen down
But I can get up
Everyone in this fucking town
Can get their back up
Oh yeah you call yourself my friend
Your back is breaking
Why don’t we find out in the end
What’s for the taking
He’s not listening, he’s not listening
If he listened to your heart, he’d hear you saying
I want, I want, I want my baby
I want, I want, I want my baby
I want, I want, I want my baby back (x2)
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I’ve fallen down
There’s no use faking
And everyone in this old town
Can hear me raging
Oh yeah, you call yourself my friend
Don’t get your back up
I guess we’ll find out in the end
Who’s the real bastard
He’s not listening, he’s not listening
If he listened to your heart, he’d hear you saying
I want, I want, I want my baby
I want, I want, I want my baby
I want, I want, I want my baby back (x2)
He’s not listening, he’s not listening
If he listened to your heart, he’d hear you saying (x2)
I want, I want, I want my baby
I want, I want, I want my baby
I want, I want, I want my baby back (x2)

when i heard this song i really loved it, and it's only recently that ive actually listened to the lyrics and wondered about the meaning. and then i noticed songmeanings didnt even have the lyrics!
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I’ve fallen down But I can get up Everyone in this fucking town Can get their back up Oh yeah you call yourself my friend Your back is breaking Why don’t we find out in the end What’s for the taking
now to me the song sounds like theres been a confrontation (im guessing the girl came out of the closert because the band [or the majority of them? i dont know] are lesbians) and then entire town is kind of iffy about it. She's fallen down because the town and her fam doesnt accept her, but shes sticking to her descision and she can get back up. She says 'Oh yeah you call yourself my friend / Your back is breaking' which i took to be like..she admited her secret and her friend doesn't have her back, shes shunned her like the rest of the town.
'He’s not listening, he’s not listening If he listened to your heart, he’d hear you saying I want, I want, I want my baby I want, I want, I want my baby I want, I want, I want my baby back '
then i think its the girl talking to her partner, who might be in a relationship and came out as a lesbian and the guy doesnt want to hear about it. and if he really listened to her he'd know she just wants to be with the girl and be happy.
'Oh yeah, oh yeah, I’ve fallen down There’s no use faking And everyone in this old town Can hear me raging Oh yeah, you call yourself my friend Don’t get your back up I guess we’ll find out in the end Who’s the real bastard '
shes fallen down, like i said before and she's not going to hide her secret or her struggle. and everyone in the town is going to hear about it and she won't be unheard. then she repeats pretty much what i explained above and it repeats
thats just my view..any thoughts?
interesting interpretation, but the singer is not a lesbian, he's transgendered. but I totaly agree - amazing song and great band.
woow now i feel like SUCH an idiot oh man -_-
Indeed, the lead singer is transgendered (female to male)
Don't feel bad, I thought the same thing when I first saw the music video.
I think the music video is genius. I had to watch it twice to get it.......... At first I thought it was some kind of English boarding school for the people for dressing the way they did. But then I saw the people exhibiting behaviour that you wouldn't expect in women competing over a man. Damn clever gender-bending.
The song is great. It's so catchy. It seems to be about a falling out of sorts between friends. Maybe about a guy. Or maybe the other ex-friend is a guy.
i think the lead singer lucas said that he sung this song from his ex's point of view. so his ex's was asking for her baby back. but yeah this is an awesome song i cant stop listening to it.
My interpretation is a little different. I think it's written from a mother's point of view. Her son is grown up but sin her heart he'll always be her baby (girl).
The Cliks are amazing. I find it incredible that Lucas won't take testosterone since it will change his voice. That is dedication to your art. But getting back to the point, lifeistolong was right, Lucas has said that the "I want"s are from the viewpoint of his ex. From interviews he has given, apparently they had a pretty brutal break-up. And then the "he's not listening" parts are his responses to what she is saying. From my understanding, he's saying "You can ask me back as many times as you want, but I'm not paying attention. I'll always ignore it. I'm not listening."
Wow, i've actually learnt a lot about the band reading these comments. I just thought the song was cool. -_-
i agree with brstanek, i think this is a story told from two points. when i listen to it, i feel like the verses are sung by Lucus to an ex girlfriend. Seems like he's trying to explain himself, and if she wanted to be there for him, she would understand.
and then the chorus, "He's not listening, if he listened to your heart he'd hear you saying....I want, I want, I want my baby back". Sounds like it's his ex's point of view.
She pleading with Lucus to give her her baby back, but he's just not going to listen. because he needs to be who he is.
