Homesick Lyrics

One, two, three; one, two, three...

Well, I left my home on hollow bones
While you were curled and sleeping
And I wandered far beneath a concrete star
And slept along the highways

But even though I am lost all the time
I've got hooks in my sides that you left there
But you're not the same, you died along the way
Now we're ghosts and we're praying for winter

Well, I found a wheel that squeaks and squeals
And I left it on your doorstep
Because I heard that you might be broken, too
And I thought it'd keep you company

But even though I am lost all the time
I've got hooks in my sides that you left there
But you're not the same, you died along the way
Now we're ghosts and we're praying for winter

I thought all of the songs on this album (Ghost) were about family/home, right? So maybe this song isn't about a girlfriend but a family member.

I think a nice idea is a son or daughter that came of age then left home.

"I left my home on hollow bones," Birds have pneumatized (or hollow) bones that allow them to fly, giving the image of the person taking flight and leaving home. But they didn't have the experience they wanted -- they missed home (homesick) and wished to return.

"But you're not the same, you died along the way," The mother of course would miss them desperately, maybe she wouldn't die but she would be different, changed by the events. The "real" her died, as did the "real" son/daughter ("Now we're ghosts" (Sidenote: Any ideas about the "praying for winter"?)

"Well, I found a wheel that squeaks and squeals, And I left it on your doorstep." I would imagine them sending period postcards home, maybe with souvenirs, represented by this line.

Other lines reinforce this story too, but I'm supposed to be doing homework so I can't waste any more time here.

Lovely song, one of my favourites by Radical Face.

My Interpretation

@bbsammy "Praying for winter" - Well winter is when birds migrate south... That's all I got

This song is just like a lullaby. I feel the narrator is haunted by a girl he loved. Their relationship was very sad - she was broken, he left her, yet he keeps thinking of her even though he wishes he could forget (hooks in my sides). When she "dies", I'm not sure if he means literally or metaphorically, but he feels it too, and they are sort of joined in this death. Then again, Ben could have been writing things because they were pleasant to write. You can't blame him.
