lol read this as she is seducing someone religious or a priest... fantastic song either way!

A couple of things I get from this:

• "Seven Devils" seven deadly sins reference
• "Ecstasy pure as a womans gold" perhaps in reference to loverless priests and ecstacy referring to sex.

For a left of centre view - the lyrics could be in reference to recreational drug taking. 60's style - non violent, mind broadening and embracing diversity rather than condemning it.

I think this is one of the more straight-forward songs on the album, yet very symbolic. I love it. I agree with fairycake--fun to read as if she is seducing someone very religious, or even a priest. Go one step further and be really sacriligeous and try it as if she is speaking to Jesus himself. The seven devils are a reference to the 7 devils spoken of in the New Testament that Christ cast out of Mary Magdalene. A woman's gold is layered with meanings since gold, esp. for a woman, has many, but probably just goes to the meanings associated with gold= power, intellect, wisdom, sure of one's self, secrets, etc. Think also of wedding bands and being a possession by being bought through gold--in many cultures, but I don't think she's using it that way here. In my temple= literally and figuratively. The bible talks of the body being a temple. No violence, but ecstacy. kneeling with her as if in prayer--sex is a prayer, both for the body and soul. great song.

Wow Tori Amos is one blunt woman! I like it. I think its cool that she gets into what she believes in, considering her dad's a Christian pastor or something like that.

This is a very sexy song. All in all, it seems like it is beckoning someone to try a different set of beliefs instead of Christianity-beliefs that honor human sexuality when it is not being abused instead of sexuality being so tightly controlled.

This is certainly a very sexy song. The sexiest on the album, by far. Also one of my favorites.

Beyond the seducing of a priest or religious man, I see this as a condemnation of religion's attitude towards sexuality. The bit about his seven devils needing love is telling him to stop feeling ashamed of his lust, to embrace it. The bit about ecstasy is about sexuality being purer than any religion.

This song reminds me of that book Rose Madder by Stephen King. It's one of my favorite books. Anyway I think this is a very female-centered song. It feels like a sort of feminist, woman-empowerment type of thing, and also a stab at the religions who try to take sexuality and feminism and make them seem evil and shameful. The male-centered thought process revolves around destruction, hate, and violence. The catholic church has been known to hate, persecute, and even kill those whom they considered their enemies. Women are known for being softer, kinder, and more loving. "In my temple boy, be warned-violence doesn't have a home now, but ecstasy-that's as pure as a woman's gold." I think she's trying to say that she can be just as strong as this male-oriented religion/world and she doesn't have to use violence. She can use love. and only women can truly understand that concept. At least that's what I get out of it.
