On Ice Lyrics
Just for a moment
The moment i met her
I lost my breath but my lips whispered
"She is the one"
Forgot who I was and who I was fooling
Didn't remember she could be my first cue to run
We moved so fast
Never thought twice
Mine came at last, put us on ice
We stayed in touch
but the touch I was wanting from her
Came from girls that scared me too little to love
So all of the thoughts I thought I might tell her
Turned into songs that until now she's never heard of
I had been taught
Love is a vice
Took all these thoughts
And I put them on ice
The vice spins and ice tends to melt
One night she asked me how I felt
The next day I woke up lying to myself
"I feel fine"
I feel fine
I feel fine
Thank God you're here
I need you to hear this
So sick of my shit
I promise I'm through tempting fate
I know I'm in love now
You are what love is to me
Please tell me this isn't too little, too late
Oh, let's move fast
Making up time would be nice
I'm so sorry I put these things on ice
I would like to ?

I've never heard a Chris Thile song that couldn't be reinterpreted to mean what it literally says, the opposite metaphor it could imply, and both ways a pure prayer.
I stumbled upon this song of his again for the second time right after a chance meeting with an incredible woman.
My ears instantly recognized the sensation of fear and excitement and uncertainty that makes those meetings so pregnant with potential.
This woman just told me she wants to meet me in person, so of course I'm listening to this song and the punch brothers song "This Girl" on repeat.
I'm kind of spiritual and superstitious. I believe words are extremely powerful and if I sing a song without adding the correct meaning to the passion behind my voice, then I might call the wrong thing into existence.
What I love about all music though, and Chris Thile's music in particular, is that he never tells what exactly it's about, because he knows the audience is supposed to resonate with the music and nit just resonate with the man who made it.
I think this whole song is open to interpretation, but knowing his background, I'd say the line starting the final movemement, "Thank God you're here, I need you to hear this."
That line specifically I think is a prayer to thee God and to the portion of divinity on each of us. Conjuring God and speaking the words I need you to hear this. If you resonate with this song, hear that line in that context and ask yourself if it feels like a direct line to your soul just opened up so it can receive the message and prepare the way.
I was an agnostic/atheist for about 20 years, but I always retained an openness to the unknowable. Chris Thile's music found me in my darkest hour and blew my soul wide open. Now I can't connect to his music truly unless I remember to listen with the ears of my soul. Then I always understand fully why it resonates with me, because I have a little piece if that same divine spirit in me and the language of spirit and soul is music because music is universal.
It sounds more like:
"Didn't remember she could be my first CURE to run"
Changes the entire idea of the line.
The last line sounds to me "I would like to help you dodge the rice" As in dodging the rice thrown at the end of a wedding ceremony....He wants to marry her.
