Top Ranking Lyrics

We've come a long way to where the mountain is high
I take my cedar to where the mountain is high

What I need is a peace and quiet
What we see is an illusion
I have no reason to confuse them
I have no reason to confuse my brothers

They have real shotguns
They were baby killers
But I warned you many times that they will burn down your house

Not today (what can I do)
Not today (to make it better)

What we need is a persuasion
What you give is retaliation
I hope one day we meet again
I hope one day we love one another

They were young soldiers
They were old liars
But I heard the rumor that they will burn down your house

Not today (what can I do)
Not today (to make it better)

They will burn down your house
They will burn down your house

'23' is a great great great album for blonde redhead but it took me a long while to really get into. top ranking is slowly becoming one of my favorites!
this song might be a reference to war. the lyrics are so vague it's hard to really come up with my own interpretation-- war is used as the road to peace and quiet, but it's an illusion. in war we kill for peace and quiet, and we sometimes confuse killers for brothers.

i think the song pertains to the vietnam war when US soldiers were given orders to annihalate entire viatnamese villages by killing everyone including women and children. they also burned down everything. sadly, the villages were innocent and were full of mainly working class people that had no involvement in the war whatsoever.

the soliders knew that what they were doing was wrong, but were just following orders. maybe that's also the point of the title, top ranking. because the top rank gave the orders for the soliders to commit such horrific crimes.

i think blonde redhead are referencing this huge mistake in history.

i think they are referencing the current war, but there are a large amount of similarities in both wars though... and so it could be a reference to both.

such a sad song though... i really love it, but if i'm feeling sensitive it will have the same tear jerking effect on me that the song "across the universe" happens to have on me.

think it's about the middle east conflict, especially the lebanese israeli war, there's even a cedar mention in there.

The line "I have no reason to confuse my brothers " reminds me of how some people say arabs and jews are like astranged brothers.

These lines too "They were young soldiers, they were old liars", Lebanon and Israel both have mandatory military service, young people fighting a war in the ame of old liars, or something...

Maybe I am completely off.
