Prize Lyrics

Well we were talking and we were drinking
Letting the fat flow go
And we were asking and we were thinking
In the belly of a bar.

It was easy almost indifferent
Until my heckles rise.
What's that you're asking if I remember?
The pub walls are dissolving.

The guilt was thin then, his hair long.
Brown to match his eyes.
It's none of your business what his name was
Would I even get a prize?

There's been a hundred and that's not boasting
Just the ways of this world.
How dare he even ask this?
These pub walls are drowning.

Your glass is empty just like your head
It's these times I don't know you.
And how about you can you remember?
You shake your head and say "Drunk."

It's a small thing why am I angry?
These words are signs of warning
Because behind them there's the implication...
The pub is burning down.

So do I get a prize for remembering that first time,
Do I get a prize for remembering his name?

I don't agree with the gay couple angle--at least, I don't see any reason to believe this applies. It's obvious to me that the other asked the one about his first gay experience, or how many men he'd been with. The one who's asking doesn't seem gay, but actually ignorant of the gay world. It's the "implication" that the history of "a hundred...not boasting, just the ways of this world," makes him a slut, that makes the one upset, along with, of course, the other's nosiness.

I used to skip this song because on probably 99% of the U.S. CD pressings (but not cassette), about one second of the song is missing, and that annoyed the shmit out of me. The version on Capsule is restored, o happy day, so now I can properly enjoy it.

Sad isn't it?

i think this song is about a gay couple arguing about one of them cheated, i just love how every single word draws the scene on a pub, when everything was calm until someone asks about the cheat and everything gets uneasy and they start fighting. i think at the end of the song they break up.

i also think is:

"your glass is empty, just like your HEAD"
