We're All in This Together Lyrics

Well my friend, I see your face so clearly
Little bit tired, little worn through the years
You sound nervous, you seem alone
I hardly recognize your voice on the telephone

In between I remember
Just before bound-up, broken-down
We drive out to the edge of the highway
Follow that lonesome dead-end roadside south

We're all in this thing together
Walkin' the line between faith and fear
This life don't last forever
When you cry I taste the salt in your tears

Well my friend, let's put this thing together
And walk the path with worn out feet of trial
'Cause if you wanted we can go on forever
Give up your jaded ways, spell your name to God

We're all in this thing together
Walkin' the line between faith and fear
This life don't last forever
When you cry I taste the salt in your tears

All we are is a picture in a mirror
Fancy shoes to grace our feet
All there is is a slow road to freedom
Heaven above and the devil beneath

We're all in this thing together
Walkin' the line between faith and fear
This life don't last forever
When you cry I taste the salt in your tears

I love the lyrics and feel of this song. The vocal talent is just incredible. Truely one of the best songs by OCMS.

to me, this song is about finding yourself. And with this song, finding God is finding yourself. it seems as if his "friends" are old "tired, a lil worn", he hardly recognizes them. maybe the londesome deadend roadside south means the opposite of the slow road to freedom. its more comforting to know that were all in this thing together (this world), "this life dont last forever" even tho their old and worn, they still have time to find themselves in this crazy world.

First line is 'Well my friend...', not 'Well my friends.'

To me, the first stanza is directed toward the narrator's friend. He is having a difficult time in life and needs some guidance.

The second stanza is a memory about the boys when they were between childhood and adulthood "Just before bound-up, broken down" is talking about the car but figuratively their spirit being bound-up and broken down. They are down on their luck so they drove out to commit a sin, hence "drive out to the edge of the highway, follow that lonesome, dead-end road SIGN south". The dead-end road sign south is a metaphor for a path to the devil.

The chorus means that the boys' actions push them closer to heaven or hell. When the narrator's friend is having a difficult time it affects the narrator too because he has empathy for his friend. "When you cry I taste the salt in your tears".

The next stanza is the narrator trying to put his friend's life together by having him walk the path to God. His friend's "worn out feet of trial" are all his tough experiences in life. The narrator tells him that he could go to heaven forever if he gives up his jaded ways and gives himself up to God.

The last stanza means that all that defines them are is how they see themselves (all we are is a picture in a mirror) and their material wealth (which will not lead them to find God). The slow road to freedom is the hard work that is necessary for his friend to go to heaven; and heaven and hell are constantly acting upon him.

Is it about finding God?

"We're all in this thing together Walkin' the line between faith and fear This life don't last forever When you cry I taste the salt in your tears"

to me say that "we" really are in this "together" (the entirety of the scheme of our seemingly "individual" lives) this fleeting life will come to an end when you "cry" when "you" hurt.... I share "your" hurt, grief or pain (because ultimately "we're all in this thing together)

i believe that we are intimately connected to one another.... more to some, less to others but all of the same stuff time is really a concept, a tool for measurements. all time can happen all at once or linearly or just however. its really not all that hard for me to imagine our lives existing also in a non-linear way. so i can see this song as expressing a deep love in me for and toward others. instead of pushing ppl away open up to them because they are emanations of the same spirit stuff that i am of "we're all in this thing together"
