The Story

The message of the song is rather obvious; smacks you in the face if you haven't realized it before, but I'll do my best to explain.

Brandi has struggled with her sexuality throughout her childhood. Her first 3 "partners" were men. Her first girlfriend was a butch, and she used to slap the hell out of Brandi. Brandi thus has a few marks on her face (or "lines") from when her 1st girlfriend, Pat, used to smack her around.

Another plausible interpretation is that when she first experimented with Pam, Pam made her go muff-diving a lot, so she had to bend over quite lot, and thus wrinkled slightly early. That's how Brandi "got to where I am", and she's trying to tell you.

Stories don't mean anything if you just keep 'em inside; she had to tell her next girlfriend ... she needed an "outlet", and her next girlfriend (also a butch), Chris, was different than Pat, and actually listened to her. At the time, Brandi thought she was made for Chris, 'cause Chris was a woman who'd actually listen to her.

I climbed across the mountain tops Swam all across the ocean blue

Brandi met Chris through a Yahoo Messenger voice mail. Chris is from England, and Brandi didn't have much money. Nevertheless, she found a way to get over the Rocky Mountains, then the Atlantic Ocean, finally to be with the butch who'd listen to her, Chris.

I crossed all the lines, and I broke all the rules But, baby, I broke them all for you

She did break all the rules. At this time, bisexuality wasn't accepted, and Chris had a severe problem with it. Brandi's explanation for this was that she had to be with men once in a while, to put up a front, so she'd be more accepted into the community in order to become popular and actually make the money necessary to be with her British Butch.

Because even when I was flat broke You made me feel like a million bucks You do I was made for you

Self-explanatory; Chris wanted Brandi's you-know-what, and didn't care if Brandi was rich or broke. So Chris didn't judge Brandi on the fact she was broke at the time; she couldn't have cared less. This was in stark contrast to Pat, who viewed Brandi as a sex object, but also a potential 401K plan if Brandi ever made it big.

You see the smile that's on my mouth It's hiding the words that don't come out

Brandi still feels guilty for thinking she was bisexual, which never sat well with Chris. This is an emotional scar for Brandi, and she wants to turn back time, but can't.

And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed They don't know my head is a mess

Her head is still a mess, because she's still attracted to men, but Chris is so domineering, and so persuasive in telling her that she's a flat out lesbian ... she's torn.

No, they don't know who I really am And they don't know what I've been through like you do And I was made for you

Nobody knows about Brandi's struggles with her sexuality -- ongoing struggles, at that, because -- as intimated -- she's still attracted to men.

And again, the lines across her face that came from being slapped by Pat and going muff-diving on Pat ... nobody knows how those wrinkles got there other than Chris.

This song is Brandi's tribute to Chris for listening to her story, and (at least pretending) to listen to her story of how she got to where she is, and pretending to care about it.
