I agree with the suggestions that the subject wishes to withdraw from typical society--even to regress to our more primal roots, as far back as our sea-dwelling ancestors.

I think virtually everyone beyond the age of 20 or so has at some time come to the realization that the more you know, the more complex and tiresome life can feel. Personally, I sometimes still wish I could retreat back to my more innocent, naive state of mind as a child. No politics, impending disasters, harsh realities, etc. Ignorance certainly can be bliss.

I'm not suggesting it's the "correct" interpretation, but it's what this song means to me. It has a borderline introspective theme to it, and I dig that immensely.

i think the 'sci-fi story' meaning may be a little too literal. i think he's using the idea of retreating to isolation as a symbol for his urge/longing to get away from society, or his actual success in doing so.

beautiful lyrics though. "against the surge of waves that held us, with that ancient grip beneath" is absolutely poetic.

This song is, as even the band themselves have said, is about a misanthrope who seeks to distance himself from the world. The man that society is alienating is the city's saving grace; he could help the world out but noboy knows because they never take the time to find out his point of veiw, a view that sees all the shallowness and stupidity of the people who won't accept his help, which is why he rolls his eyes. Since the masses won't listen to him... those eyes are heartless. He has no pity for stupid, and will probably end up thinking "I told you so." He's not lying, he won't be fake for the sake of the rest of the world, and he gives up trying to make others see. And they say he doesn't understand what's going on. When he leaves, the public ridicules him for leaving society... saying that he's devolving. And once he's gone, the world starts to realize what their created choas killed when it pushed him away (still learning what choas killed). He's kind of like a cowardly Howard Roark

But also, I'd like to add, that this song does have an evolutionary influence, but it's not the main point of the song. It's not about the "sins" of man but more of our culture and how we've changed to behave this way. Maybe it's our culture that's evolved into something horrible, and he just wants to get away from all this. Obviously, a lot of Chevelle's songs show discontent of our modern day culture, how we put our priorities in order (being money and fame at the top) influenced us to become selfish and arrogant.

while i do believe this song is somewhat about a misanthrope, i also believe the song is decrying the challenge of trying to bring the truth of God to culture so ignorant and full of worthless things ( the city's saving grace). there is somewhat of an allegory to the biblical account of jonah in how he references coming from a fish. I think overall pete is lamenting the fact that he doesnt think the public will ever catch on to the real message of his music, so he's to the point of why even try. (whoever knows, nobody knows) its lament and frustration over the fact of how he can somehow relate this knowledge to people who dont want to hear it

I think "this city's saving grace" is suppost to be irony where the the very person that's trying to escape society is in fact its salvation

the song is about someone who is lonely and alienates hims self from othere because he cant stand the way people have got, how fake people are now and is going into his sactuary where he has longed to go for so long... as the band states ""Saferwaters," which is about a misanthrope who strives to distance himself from humanity. I noticed that evolutionary theme as well. Which seems more interesting to me because I'd bet that Pete doesn't believe in evolution.

Surely one of my favorites from Vena Sera at this point.
