Single Millionaires Lyrics
there's a man on the corner with his hands tightly to his hat so it won't blow away.
with a girl, with her hands in her pockets holding tightly to her money so she won't blow it today.
its all the same, everyday.
when he gets home from work, there's his children already in bed without seeing his face today.
and the girl, with empty pockets, spent her money, she might as well throw her wallet in the fireplace.
cause she is the L and he is the O for us, Liars Out there,
and she is the V and he is the E for the Violence in Everyone.
and we might spell you, we're nothing like you.
and when his kids grow up old and have children of their own they swear they will never wear the same size hat their father wears.
and the girl, now a women, says she's happy, and thanks god for jewelry and single millionaires.
cause she is H and he is the O for us, Humble Orphans,
and she is the P and he is the E for Potential in Everyone,
and we might spell you, we're nothing like you.
with a girl, with her hands in her pockets holding tightly to her money so she won't blow it today.
and the girl, with empty pockets, spent her money, she might as well throw her wallet in the fireplace.
and she is the V and he is the E for the Violence in Everyone.
and we might spell you, we're nothing like you.

Amazing song. I love how Brighten's songs go deeper than just some screwed up relationship.
This song is NOT selfexplanatory. You have to dig deep to understand its meaning.
For starters, Brighten is telling two stories at once.
I'll start with the first story. It's about a man with children. His hat that he holds represents the way that he lives his life. He works a lot, and barely sees his kids.
The second story is about a girl. When she was younger, she would spend money every chance she could. The money in her pocket represents who she is as a girl, and who she will be when she becomes a women. She spends the money carelessley, selfishly, irresponsibly.
The man and girl, are standing on the same street corner, probably no relation, it's just a coincidence.
The man's children grow old, and remember how their father was never there for them. They don't want their kids to live that life, so they swear they will never wear the hat size that their father wore (this is connected to the hat the father was holding in the beginning of the song).
The girl grows up, and has the same money habits as she had as a girl, and marries guys only for their money and the jewlery they buy her.
The man and girl are symbolic of the "liars out there", and "violence in everyone" because of the mistakes they have made.
They also represent "humble orphans" and "potential in everyone" because they still have H-O-P-E, obviously.
And the two stories come together in one song, only to connect with each other.
this was perfect. (:

To me, this song is about how, no matter how much we think we want material goods and comfort and luxury, that it doesn't make up for the fact that we as humans need love and companionship. And that even when we don't want to do something it is ingrained in our nature. To me it is just sort of about our human-ness.
I love this song. And the maning is pretty self-explanitory, I think.
*meaning
Yeah it's pretty self-explanitory, I suppose. &what a beautiful song. The best by Brighten, I'm thinking.
Grrrrrreat song (:

Oh, and you forgot, "HOLDING tightly to his hat so it won't blow away."
The letters he spells out throughout the song spell out LOVE ("she is the L and he is the O... she is the V and he is the E") and HOPE ("she is H and he is the O... she is the P and he is the E"). Subliminal, eh? I doubt this is coincidental.
