On and On and On Lyrics

on and on and on
we'll stay together yeah
on and on and on
we'll be together yeah

you and i will try
to stay together yeah
on and on and on
we'll be together yeah

please don't cry
we're designed to die
don't deny
what's inside

on and on and on
we'll stay together yeah
on and on and on
on and on and on

one day we'll disappear
together in a dream
however short or long
our lives are going to be

i will live in you
or you will live in me
until we disappear
together in a dream

please don't cry
we're designed to die
you can't deny
even the gentlest tide

on and on and on
we'll be together yeah
on and on and on
on and on and on
we're going to try

please don't cry
this world of words and meanings
makes you feel outside
something that you feel already
deep inside
you've denied
go ahead and cry

on and on and on
we'll stay together yeah
on and on and on
on and on and on

you and i
we'll stay together yeah
you and i will try
to make it better yeah

It's silly, but I think about dying sometimes, not in a suicidal way, but just thinking about how would be effected if someone special to you passed away. This song to me is written to the person that is left behind.

It isn't silly. For the longest time i just listened to this song, until my father past away. The day after his death i heard this song and to me it spoke a lot about loosing someone that is close to you. As if that person who had died was trying to console you. Perhaps this song isn't ment to be about that, but to me it is, and will now forever be. I can't listen to this song now without thinking about my dad. "I will live in you, or you will live in me" The memories...

One of my favorite songs from the album. The first time I heard it I stopped doing everything else and just revelled in the ambience and beauty of it. The slow climax and emotion in the lyrics make the song an emotional rollercoaster, much like what the narrator is describing to what I'm assuming is his lady. The contrast in the lyrics tells the story completely, one lyric starting with 'please don't cry' and ending with 'go ahead and cry'. The song appears likens death, with lyrics such as 'we're designed to die', and 'i will live in your and you will live in me', to breaking apart. The closing lyric narrows it down to what I'm thinking is a break-up since it say 'you and i will try to make it better yeah.

As I'm reading the lyrics again I think maybe his 'we're designed to die' referance is just to show that we're mortal, a kind of play at the saying 'we all make mistakes' or 'I'm still human'.

The music is crucial in interpreting this sound, the climb-and-fall chord progressing, the swirling strings, ultimately this restless feeling that really puts you into the lyrics, building up only to let you down again. On and on and on, up and down and up and down. Much like the relationship its describing, the music captures an incredible beauty, but not without it's crescendos and decrescendos--every relationship has dynamics.

its about the end of life. one day all of us wil "disappear in a dream = dying". i think its a song that has the function to give the people hope and take the fear of dying one day.

When Jeff Tweedy starts singing again after the solo, the song sounds so unbelievably perfect in every way. When I die, I want this song to be played at my funeral.

I think of the ocean when I hear this song- which I'm assuming was his point when making this song. The repetitive riff of just two notes and as loldoctor put it- its crescendos and decrescendos, it's very wave like. Also his mention of tides does it in for me. For the most part the ocean is calm, but once in a while you'll get a surge of crashing waves (u can't deny even the gentlest tide) and the ocean is so expansive it seems to go on and on and on.

As I understand Jeff wrote it for his newly-widowed father.

To me, the "you" in this song seems to be Jeff's depression. Just a thought.

How sure is whoever posted this of the lyrics, because I heard different things. I heard 'yet' where all the 'yeah's are... and 'I will live and you, oh you will live in me' I can't really find it anywhere else, but I'm just wondering if you're sure?
