This is a very good song. One of the highlights from Them Vs. You Vs. Me.

As for the meaning, something along the lines of someone wanting to hold themselves back from something or someone, but they can't.

I think the line "I tell myself as I stay in the shadow", along with what Trikmasterfly said about trying to hold themselves back, can also be a reference to their song 'Stay in Shadow"

Not to try to discredit you guys, but I think the meaning is a bit more obvious and specific. I'm pretty sure this is about a guy who likes a girl he met but he's too chicken to ask her out. This is definitely something I can relate to. He tries to wait for the perfect moment whilst "staying in the shadows" once she's alone and away from her friends, "but he goes". He tries not to chicken out because "there's little fear her words could ever hurt me", referring to rejection, but he chickens out...
