Powerlines Lyrics

the days are long, and they sing you a song
about how all your troubles have gone
we hold it all inside, our sunlight ends
we'll never let it go, i think you understand

we drive around all the mystery towns
i can see it now, it's all in my head
staring down at the gravity ground
when you're this high up, you never wanna come down

when i was lost in your eyes, was i trying to find
a way beyond all the palm tree powerlines
(wooo... I do what I can)

dreaming dreams of material things
i try to wake you up, i do what i can
let me take you to some places i've seen
down a two-way road, i know where it goes

when i was lost in your eyes, was i trying to find
a way beyond all the palm tree powerlines

(instrumental break)

(wooo... I do what I can)
(wooo... I do what I can)

when i was lost in your eyes, was i trying to find
a way beyond all the palm tree powerlines?

Can't believe no one's commented. Amazing song. :)

I think sometimes songs are best when they are written with a personal meaning, perhaps that not many people will really understand. I think this is one of those songs.

That said, from what I can see the writer seems quite unhappy, and missing things the way they were. The first verse describes how we're supposed to be happy with what we have, and so we pretend to be, but really we're not happy at all.

The bit about being lost in her eyes comes across as talking about a past relationship where she didn't trust his commitment to her. He asks her if she really thought he'd rather be anywhere else:

"When I was lost in your eyes, Was I trying to find A way beyond All the palm tree powerlines?"

And yes, it sounds vaguely similar to New Slang. We know already! ;)

It's about the mundanity that is life. The boredom of a road trip form the days before unlimited electronic distractions. The Sunday afternoon with nothing to do but endure the pointless passage of time that today's kids (thankfully) are able to avoid contemplating. The inevitable slide of a pointless existence into inexorable death, to Tolstoy's conclusion that "all is folly."

absolutely beautiful song- not quite sure if my interpretation is accurate, but I believe the song is terrorizing the modern society of tabloidization..? for example "Palm Trees" are often interpreted as something glamorous, "powerlines" often represented as something very commercial, modern,.. maybe the narrator is trying to find a way out of today's modern culture..
