One More Lyrics

I sit here by myself
Just staring into space
I thought I knew you well
But who can ever say

It seems I spent too long
I can’t define my right from wrong

One more for the night
And one more for the pain
And one more long goodbye
And one shot to the brain
And one more takes the knife
And one more takes the train
Who do I name today

A dream of better days
Was long gone by the way
Is there a better place
But who can ever say
It seems I spent too long
I can’t define my right from wrong

One more for the night
And one more for the pain
And one more long goodbye
And one shot to the brain
And one more takes the knife
And one more takes the train
Who do I name today
Who do I blame today

'Cause nothing’s over till it’s over
And if it’s over I don’t want to hear it
Look into my eyes, I told her
Holding onto what is gone won’t heal it

It seems I spent too long
I can’t define my right from wrong

One more for the night
And one more for the pain
And one more long goodbye
And one shot to the brain
And one more takes the knife
And one more takes the train
Who do I name today
Who do I blame today

It's about a breakup. He's sitting there, and he's heart broken about a relationship[ that went where he didn't expect. And my guess would be that he's drinking, and just doing these shots. Even "one shot to the brain" would mean one more to try to forget.

I agree that the song is about a break up, but I've taken a more macabre approach to explaining it. I interpret "One more for the night, One more for the pain" as being one more time he is alone due to an argument, and the same for the pain...In other words, the feeling is nothing new, even though this time the break up is final. "One more long goodbye" could refer to the fact that the breakup was drawn out and their goodbyes were lengthy, and now in contemplation of suicide he once again says goodbye to his ex lover, as well as everyone/everything else. "One shot to the brain" can be interpreted as blatantly literal, and a contemplation of a way to carry out this final goodbye. "One more takes the knife" Another thought of self inflicted harm with a knife. As he sits in misery caring about his mistakes and still longing for his ex, She is getting on with her life ("One more takes the train") So as she is living and pursuing her life, he is ending his. In the second to last repetition of the chorus, I believe the word "train" is changed to "blame" (Listen carefully to the song) which would tie in perfectly to this because she would indirectly be the cause of his death, with the likelihood of her feeling some guilt toward it. "I can't define my right from wrong" expresses his confusion, allowing this interpretation to be possible, even if it is not the most practical.

more complicated than just a break up song, i think it's about betrayal ("i thought i know you well, well who can ever say?"). this person has been deeply wounded, and it has made them pessimistic (" a dream of better days was long gone by the way") and question everything ("is there a better place, well who can ever say?", ""i can't define my right from wrong"). the person is searching for answers and closure despite the pain ("who do i blame today?") and at one point is definitely in the denial stage ("if it's over, i don't want to hear it")

the chorus to me could mean 2 things...

one...that they see pain in themselves and then see it everywhere else too ("who do i name today", references to shot to the brain and knife could be suicide, murder references)...like someone reading the paper or watching the news and can't escape the bad news everywhere.

two....it could be that it's the same person getting hurt over and over...a shot to the brain, one more taking the knife, etc could be them being betrayed again and again.
