washed up conquistador, le mort Beaten down with two by fours= Zapatista movement in Mexico? Revolutionaries who often use planks of wood as fake guns because they do not have enough supplies. If it is in reference to the Zapatistas- way to go Beck! Either way, these lyrics are really cool.

I don't know what the song as a whole means, but those last two lines:

Send her away when she's sick of the sun Let the sleet and the snow teach her a lesson

in Brazil (and other South American countries) the death squads regard street kids as a legitimate target, albeit not of primary importance.

some ugly shit to try to wrap your mind around. no wonder this wasn't on the regular version of the CD.

(similarly, the UK version of Mutations includes a track "Runners Dial Zero" not on the US version, probably because--whatever Beck's actual intent might have been--some folks might have interpreted the lyrics as making an ironic joke about 9/11)
