Love's Not A Competition (But I'm Winning) Lyrics
I won't, be the one to disappoint you, anymore,
I know, I've said all this and that you've heard it, all before,
The trick is, getting you to think that all this, was your idea,
And that this, was everything you've ever wanted, out of here,
Love's not a competition but I'm winning.
I'm not sure, what's truly altruistic, anymore,
When every, good thing that I do is listed, and you're keeping score,
Love's not a competition but I'm winning.
Love's not a competition but I'm winning.
At least I thought I was, but there's no way of knowing,
At least I thought I was, but there's no way of knowing,
You know what it's like when you're new to the game but I'm not.
I won't, be the one to disappoint you,
I won't, be the one to disappoint you, anymore
I know, I've said all this and that you've heard it, all before,
The trick is, getting you to think that all this, was your idea,
And that this, was everything you've ever wanted, out of here,
When every, good thing that I do is listed, and you're keeping score,
Love's not a competition but I'm winning.
At least I thought I was, but there's no way of knowing,
You know what it's like when you're new to the game but I'm not.
I won't, be the one to disappoint you, anymore

This song is beautifully written, the lyrics (The trick is, getting you to think that all this, was your idea) suggest a controlling partner, who is being caught out by their partner, putting them under a new light.I'm not sure, what's truly altruistic, any more, could mean everything that was done in the relationship was not questioned before, but now that the spouse is trying to break free from the (mental shackles), new questions are risen that might not have been before, therefore putting a relationship under an uncertain strain (At least I thought I was, but there's no way of knowing). I think this track in particular has some 'Smiths' influence which makes for a good lyrical and musical track. Sorry if no-one gets what I'm trying to say this is my first review, thank you!

I can really resonate with this as hindsight is always 20/20. My long standing girlfriend and I recently underwent a horrible breakup, but it was after all the emotions had died down that we really started to understand one another, and she really began revealing some truths to me. What it boiled down to was that this whole time that I thought I had been loving her to the best of my ability (and I was), in her eyes, she just loved me in an entirely different way. She basically told me that if I had learned to loved her the same way she had loved me, then we would still be together. "I'm not sure, what's truly altruistic, anymore, When every, good thing that I do is listed, and you're keeping score," really got to me because what I believed in my mind to be doing all the right things (my own personal truth) still wasn't good enough for her. All the good things I did WERE in fact listed and she understood my caring for her, but I guess I really never opened my self up to her like she needed."Love's not a competition but I'm winning... At least I thought I was, but there's no way of knowing" I really thought I was winning by showing her the love I had for her, but there was no way of knowing that it wasn't right kind for her after all...
When I first saw the tracklist for 'Yours Truly, Angry Mob'. this song immediately caught my eye for the name--traditional humorous Kaiser Chiefs. It ends up being one of my favorites. It may be bland, but it reminds me of the beginning reminds me of the Cure and i LOVE the tones used in it.
i guess i can also relate to the song--a relationship that's just built on trying to be the best. haha
this song rules ! i first heard it on the home and away ad in australia, and i downloaded it. and its really reallycool.
Wintersfella don't worry your review sums this song up perfectly. I was gonna post but you kinda took the words out of my mouth!
I don't usually listen to the Kaisers. Don't get me wrong, they make perfect pop but it's a bit overplayed. However, this song caught my imagination. It's brilliantly simple and I can relate it to my own situation.
Hope this makes sense: My x girlfriend recently moved out but has since realised this was a mistake on her part, but I can't have her back...She's a controlling character and will never take the blame for anything. So she has turned it into my fault but "the trick is getting her to think that all this was her idea", which it was! There is a massive internal battle of wills going on: she's trying to get back with me and, even tho I still have feelings for her, I can't be having that (i won't be the one to disappoint her anymore).. It's not a competition but I think i'm winning..at the moment, but there is no way of knowing. Love can thump you between the eyes at the most inconvenient moment! Keep you posted.
She was also "keeping score", but not of the altruistic things I did, only the negative.
I agree this could have been written by Morrisey. Simple lyrics but so ambiguous, pure poetry.
The guitars in this are awesome. The first time I heard it I almost cried.
Paramore does a cover of this song. ITS AMAMZING YOUTUBE IT
This song is about the sense of trying to please your partner and do everything to make them "happy" but it still not being enough, and they're always charging.
"I won't be the one to disappoint you anymore, I know, I've said all this and that you've heard It all before" This shows that they feel that they are always disappointing their partner, and already said multiple times that it wouldn't happen again.
"The trick is getting you to think that all this was your idea And that this was everything you've ever wanted out of here" The trick is to be the person you want me to be, for you to think I'm the one.
"I'm not sure what's truly altruistic anymore, When every good thing that I do is listed and you're keeping score" I don't even know if I do things because I actually want to, or just because I know that you're demanding.
"Love's not a competition but I'm winning" Love shouldn't be this way, everything feels "forced". I feel like I'm going out of my way a lot to make you happy.
"At least I thought I was but there's no way of knowing," At least I felt like I was doing a lot of efforts, but I don't really know if you recognize them or if they are enough for you anymore.
"You know what it's like when you're new to the game but I'm not" In the beginning it was easier for you to appreciate me, I felt secure in that sense. But as the time passes, you seem harder and harder to please.
I've been listening to this on repeat for the last days for some reason. I love this song!
