Everyday I love you less and less
It's clear to see that you've become obsessed
I've got to get this message to the press
That everyday I love you less and less
And everyday I love you less and less
I've got to get this feeling off my chest
The Doctor says all I needs pills and rest
Since everyday I love you less and less
And less and less,

I know, I feel it in my bones
I'm sick, I'm tired of staying in control
Oh yes, I feel a rat upon a wheel
I've got to know what's not and what is real
Oh yes I'm stressed, I'm sorry I digressed
Impressed you're dressed to SOS

Oh, and my parents love me
Oh, and my girlfriend loves me
Everyday I love you less and less
I can't believe once you and me did sex
It makes me sick to think of you undressed
Since everyday I love you less and less
And everyday I love you less and less
You're turning into something I detest
And everybody says that your a mess
Since everyday I love you less and less
And less, and less

I know, I feel it in my bones
I'm sick, I'm tired of staying in control
Oh yes, I feel a rat upon a wheel
I've got to know what's not and what is real
Oh yes I'm stressed, I'm sorry I digressed
Impressed you're dressed to SOS

Oh, and my parents love me
Oh, and my girlfriend loves me
Oh, they keep photos of me
Oh, that's enough love for me
Oh, and my parents love me
Oh, and my girlfriend loves me
Oh, they keep photos of me
Oh, that's enough love for me

To me its from the point of view of a guy whose so over his ex that he desperately needs to tell her how over her he is ("got to get this mesage to the press"). So in actual fact he's not over her at all, he's still madly in love with her and his constant repetitive mantra of "Every day i love you less and less" is an attempt to convince himself to get over her. He tries to tell himself that the love he gets from his parents and current girlfriend is sufficient for him, but despite him knowing that this might rationally be the case he still has feelings for her. He is confused like a rat running on a wheel and just wants to know what is real and what isn't. In short: the beauty that is post-relationship depression.

    Song Meaning

I think it's pretty clear that it's about an ex that is trying to get her partner back and he's doing his best to convince himself that he is over her. Here's why:

"It's clear to see that you've become obsessed" -- she can't let go of the relationship.

"Unless, unless..." -- he can't quite convince himself that he is over her and he's getting tired of that constant, inner battle.

"I’ve got to know what's not and what's real" -- he's trying to figure out his feelings about his past and current relationships; maybe there is a love/lust situation going on, or he feels people are trying to manipulate him.

"Impressed, you're dressed to SOS" -- his ex is trying to "dress to impress" in the hopes of getting back together ("saving the ship").

"And everybody says that you're a mess" -- he doesn't have contact with the person anymore because they broke up, but they shared friends that are giving him updates on her.

"Ooooooh, and my parents love me, Ooooooh, and my girlfriend loves me..." -- I think in the end, he wants to sleep with his ex again, but in doing so he knows he would be hurting the people that love him (his parents, his girlfriend). This decision is what is stressing him out.

I love the "ah ah ah ah ah" in the background. My mum swears it comes straight from the count on sesame st. she now knows it as the count's song funnily enough.

i think this song is about a guy who is in love with someone, but is trying to convince himself that he is over her, but he can't quite.

the whole Brit-pop think is a little quirky but as far as it goes, the Kaiser Chiefs are pretty great. The 'my parents love me', 'my girlfriend loves me', 'they keep photos of me' is a very nice touch and no I don't think it's odd for anyone to sing about themselves. Lots of songs are written in the first person.

I got annoyed with no one writing out complete full lyrics, a couple of people have tried but here they are:

yeah, that fits in great ... one slight problem though, how do you shag the press & the media? ...and how do you undress it in the first place?

by the way, anyone know what the 'dressed to SOS' bit may mean? rat on a wheel i guess refers to the futility of his efforts to continue their relationship. oh, and why does everyone think he's talking about his ex? maybe he's just bored of their relationship...

I always figured this song was about some crazed fan. Maybe he thought it was cool in the start, and that led to the sex-part, but then the fan turned out to be some obsessed nutter, and now he's trying to get rid of her (him?).

I think this is about a guy and a girl he had an affair with... He realized he's got all the love he needs, from his parents, his girlfriend... and that how a big mistake the girl was... but sometimes he can't help but lust after her... BUT He is clear that he likes her less and less and won't do it again.. She's an eye candy when dressed, but he won't do the same mistake again.

Actually he's not talking about himself. He just had an affair, and he isn't convincing himself or anything. It's the feeling you get when the rush of the affair is over, and you start seeing things in more clear and simple terms. So every day it gets easier for him to forget about this girl and go on with his normal life.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
