For Yasgur's Farm Lyrics

Who am I but you and the sun?
A slight reflection of everyone
Was it me who let you walk away?
Were you the one or is it we're the same?
What are we in time going by?
A simple story of a younger life
Having dreams and somehow through the day
We haven't come so far to lose our way

Look at me
I believe it's true
You're a part of me
I'm a part of you

Love is only what we come to live
The waking, breathing in all we give
A crystal passing reflected in our eyes
Eclipsing all the jealousy and lies

Look at me
I believe it's true
You're a part of me
I'm a part of you

Quiet as the voices in a dream,
Without two shadows; the things I've seen
Remember the evening I let you walk away?
Were you the one, or is it we're the same?

Look at me
I believe it's true
You're a part of me
I'm a part of you

There are some slight, but significant changes to the lyrics I'd like to suggest. The appear here in CAPS. for clarity:

Who am I but you and the SON? A SLANT reflection IN everyone Was it me who let you walk away? Were you the one or is it we're the same?

What are we in time going by? A simple story of a younger life HALF IN DREAM and somehow through the day We haven't come so far to lose our way

Look at me I believe it's true You're a part of me I'm a part of you

Love is only what we come to live The waking, breathing in all we give A crystal passing reflected in our eyes Eclipsing all the jealousy and lies

Look at me I believe it's true You're a part of me I'm a part of you

Quiet as the voices in a dream, Without TO SHADOW the things I've seen Remember the evening I let you walk away? Were you the one, or is it we're the same?

Look at me I believe it's true You're a part of me I'm a part of you

I think this song is essentially about lost love. I usually don't buy into love songs, but this one seems especially unique in that the narrator has failed to pursue a woman he loves ("Remember the evening I let you walk away?"). He knows the two of them are meant to be together, as evidenced by the chorus, because they're so alike. The lyrics are especially relatable to me because I've too often allowed the same thing to happen to me; I've let questions get in the way of pursuing girls that have shown interest in me. The narrator's elevated voice in the chorus really hits it home for me too, as he seems to be expressing some underlying frustration.

Probably my favourite Mountain song. Has a real feel of nostalgia to it. Yasgur's Farm was the venue for Woodstock. If Wikipedia is to be trusted, Mountain performed this song at the festival while it was still untitled and subsequently named it after the place.

The lyrics are incorrect on most (general) lyric sites. The above ones are mostly correct, I believe the third line in the second paragraph should be "Half in dream" not "Having dreams". I agree with kirbsta, that it is about lost love. But considering the title, the site at which a generation yearned to return to the garden (i.e woodstock) I believe the author is recalling his passed child-like nature. I see this as a response to Blood Sweat and Tears 1968 album," The Child if Father to the Man". As for the author "letting you walk away", I believe...

Also, "slight" reflection should read "slant" reflection. As in each of us is in each other, just a little bit...,

The song is a tribute to Woodstock, at which Mountain played, you can hear them on the 2nd Woodstock album. Max Yasgur was the farmer whose land they used for the festival. The lyrics are a bit trippy and existential, like Joni Mitchell's Woodstock.

Song Meaning

@Wrd2255 The song BECAME a tribute to Woodstock when they renamed it "For Yasgur's Farm". The thing is, they played it AT Woodstock, so that couldn't have been its original intent. It must have had some other name when they performed it AT Yasgur's Farm, or maybe they simply hadn't given it a definite name yet.

In the Canned Heat bio "Living the Blues", they mention that CH met up with Pappalardi after both had played, and were desperately trying to get out of there through the sea of people. Pappalardi is said to have stolen a limo, and CH caught a ride with him. May be what "We haven't come so far to lose our way" is about. The relationship lyrics could be about Collins and Pappalardi, who had a very troubled relationship (she ended up murdering him years later), possibly the "jealously and lies" reference.
