Lover, You Should've Come Over (Live At Sin-e Version) Lyrics

Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water
And maybe Im too young to keep good love from going wrong
But tonight youre on my mind so you never know

Every inch of me is full of pain,
Oh, You should've come over,
My broken bones can smell the rain,
And they're aching to recover,
And the rain,
I wanna come down fast like kisses on my skin.
But it passed me by,
And it left me dry
Lover you should've come over.

Broken down and hungry for your love With no way to feed it
Where are you tonight,
child you know how much I need you
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run

Too young to hold on,
And too old to break free and run,
Oh too old run.

Oh... Lover you should've come over,
Well I wait, And I burn,
Will I ever see your return,
Oh Lover you should've come over,

Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who wants you with him
My body turns and yearns for sleep that will never come

Its never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
Its never over, all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her
Its never over, all my blood for the memories and the sweetness of her laughter
Its never over, shes the tear the hangs inside my soul forever

Well maybe Im just too young
To keep good love from going wrong

Oh... lover, you shouldve come over
cause its not too late

Will I wait, Will i Burn?
Will i ever see your return?
Oh lover you should've come over, over, over, over

When love dies it invariably leaves it's legacy. Sometimes it's no more than a gravestone we visit casually, other times it's a ghost that haunts our once inhabited heart. When I read the lyrics "funeral mourners" I find it difficult to decide for sure if Buckley wrote them in the literal or analogical sense. In the literal sense it can be about an actual loss of someone close, he's suffering and this song is a reflection on his longing for the love and comfort he craves from his lover in his suffering. Sometimes it's only in those moments of grief we realize how much we rely on love. He wants her to know he's hurting and come to him, forgetting whatever troubles have passed between them and caused the split. However I more so believe it is meant in the analogical sense and that it is a relationship has which has died. Rain i think symbolizes regret or longing, always falling and him opening the doors and windows of his heart to receive it. He is drowning in desperation to have her with him but won't let go of his fear and pride in order to swim to the surface. He's afraid he's not the man he needs to be to love her the way she deserves and he's too proud to admit his need for her. But there's hope in this song and that's what i like about it. I'm always left with the feeling that in the morning they'll reunite. The love in this song is too consuming to be denied.

this song is so beautiful, full jeff song i ever heard altho it was the grave version. i agree with the tonagamu, this version is much more emotional and intense. the lyrics are much more about his willingness to give the world for one touch, or kiss or a night sleeping beside her again. it is about love unending and more powerful than anything else. i think we can all relate to that in one way or another

Sometimes the end of a relationship can be as devastating as the death of a loved one. The rain to me signifies the emotional sadness one feels.. the tears one cries over the devastation of loss. This version, this song, it's just so heart-breakingly beautiful. It's soulful, honest, heartfelt, passionate, sad, and hopeful.
