Dulcinea Lyrics

He is not mad
His thought is clearer than
The saner man

For in her he saw
Beauty overflowing
Through the tattered clothes

She was his queen
She is a queen

In dreams he
Wanders the dark
In search of her

This song is about an old spanish story about a man who goes crazy after reading old spanish love stories and wants to have one of his own. So he finds this girl and renames her Dulcinea without her knowing. He thinks she is the most beautiful girl alive, even though she is a poor farm girl.

Don Quixote is the story. He reads book about the Knights Errand and becomes delusional believing he is a Knight. He proclaims some pesant girl he thought was beautiful as his queen even though he has never actually spoken to her, naming her Dulcinea.

He goes of in journeys in the world trying to restore justice, but only cause people lots of problems and is constantly beaten up. In his delusions he declares enchantments are to blame.

At the end of the story he wakes up from his delusions, sorry for all the trouble he caused. This is portrayed later...

Dulcinea means something akin to an overly elegant "sweetness". In this way, Dulcinea is an entirely fictional person for whom Quijote relentlessly fights. To this day, a reference to someone as your "Dulcinea" implies hopeless devotion and love for her.

Don Quijote finds a true love whom he calls Dulcinea. She is a simple peasant in his home town, but Quijote imagines her to be the most beautiful of all women. At times, Quijote goes into detail about her appearance, though he freely admits that he has never seen her.

It does sound like he says "In dreams he wanders the dark in search of her light".

I agree with brokenimperfect it's a wonderful line.

This is similar to so did we, in the sense that it's about something that seems to be destined to fail but the person still persists.

He is not mad, although he has reason to be because he's in search of this intangible thing, that he can't reach but he's got a calm because this is the right thing to search for for him. His thought is clearer than the saner man, is saying that he is not sane, or at least to societies common perceptions of sanity, but yet his thoughts are clearer his purpose is direct and not tainted. So the in her he saw beauty overflowing, what a great adjective, overflowing. It was so unbelievable that it overflowed. He saw this unbelievable faith empowering hope. Whether she was one person or thing, or various multiple things. Through the tattered clothes meaning that she or whatever she represents was seen by others as to be worn or tattered but he saw through it. In other words the earth in a sense, tattered and destroyed at parts but sees this undeniable beauty and hope in it. She was his queen as in he couldn't rule without her, or couldn't be without her, she was a queen meaning despite his feelings she was it by itself.

In dreams he wanders the dark in search of her light

the dreams are either the dreams at night or the dream of our perception on life. And he wanders the dark, so dark is the absence of light meaning, he's wandering this hopeless tattered land of dreams or illusions, in search of this hope this overflowing beauty, that makes so he is capable of RULING. it's unbelievable how so few of words carry so much meaning. Sure it's off of an idea of a book but it means so much more.

i also wouldn't say it's a hopeless devotion..

The devotion itself in my mind is based on hope. It's hopeful rather than hopeless, but yet a devotion that may be destined to fail.

This song is based on the book Don Quixote, by Cervantes. Don Quixote is a delusional man who decides that he is a chivalric knight. A knight needs a lady to whom he devotes his deeds, so he decides that a nearby village girl on a pig farm is actually a princess named Dulcinea.

One way to interpret the book is as a tragedy, where the post-chivalry world sees Quixote's idealism as madness. From this viewpoint, it's the world that is mad, not Quixote, because the world he sees is better than reality.

So, he is not mad, his thought is clearer than the saner men. Because he is able to see beauty in the simple reality, such as a princess in the pig farmer, despite her tattered clothes. She is his queen. Not just a muddy peasant girl, but a queen. He spends most of the novel adventuring, or wandering, through his delusions, the "dark", devoting his acts to her.

Of course, he never finds her, because she doesn't really exist. But, his belief in her and what she represents drives him to become either a hero or a madman, depending on your point of view.
