Not Romeo Not Juliet Lyrics
This is a story about a boy and a girl
Tryin' to find their life in the big world
Somehow they're together
There ain't much to the mystery
Misery loves company
She just waves her hand and says "whatever"
Well this ain't love, this ain't love, this ain't love at all
And he says, "we're not Romeo, we're not Juliet.
How long does it take to fill this emptiness?
We're just two lost souls and baby, we got no regrets.
Don't want to say bye bye,
Babe it's just you and I.
We're not Romeo, we're not Juliet."
He ain't pretty with his hard old heart
Second-generation immigrant scars
And he knows that this ain't heaven, no
She's all skinny like a cigarette
And he's the only thing, the only thing that she respects
And he's trying to make it better
This ain't love, this ain't love, this ain't love at all
And she says, "we're not Romeo, we're not Juliet.
You'd thought you've seen it all,
But you ain't seen nothing yet.
We're just two lost souls, oh
Baby we've got not regrets
Now it's just you and I
We're nothing unless we try.
We're not Romeo, we're not Juliet."
It has to feel right but it never does
It has to be perfect but it never is.
You want to be sure but you never do.
We're not Romeo or Juliet,
It's just me and you
We're just two lost souls and baby,
we got no regrets
Don't want to say bye bye,
Babe it's just you and I.
We're not Romeo, we're not Juliet
We're not Romeo, we're not Juliet
Oh, how long does it take to fill this emptiness?
We're just two lost souls and baby,
we got no regrets
Now it's just you and I
We're nothing unless we try.
Oh no, we're not Romeo, not Juliet
No we're not, that's a fact.

I love this song so much. To me this song means that their is obviously a guy and girl and they somehow found each other when they had no one else. They don't live the perfect great life, it sounds like they are working low class or middle class citizens trying to get by. They are both in love without the perfect "in love" feeling. that's why I kinda think they are both expecting the love story like Romeo and Juliet and it's not like that at all. Also, it could mean that they expect to stay together unlike Romeo and Juliet. I can relate to this in so many words. Feeling like a relationship is not going to be a "Romeo and Juliet" situation and it's not going to be that perfect and it's always going to have it's moments. My favorite line is "Now it's just you and I, We're nothing unless we try Oh no, we're not Romeo, not Juliet"
:) I love it. I love Bryan Adams.
When I read these lyrics, I imagine a boy and girl who are friends. They don't share any romantic feelings toward each other (hence, "this ain't love" and "not romeo not juliet"), but perhaps they know each other really well and have helped each other through a lot. They might also be young, so they're naturally confused and trying to figure out how to live their lives together. One of the struggles they share together is their individual frustrations in finding a compatible romantic partner, for which the lyrics describe the reasons to (ie. the "second generation immigrant scars" for the boy and how the boy is the only person the girl respects - indicating that the girl is having trouble finding a lover who she truly finds worthy of her romantic attention).
I really appreciate the other commenter's interpretation as well. Really interesting stuff. Bryan Adams is one of my favorite singers and this is a real gem of a song.
