We Were Lovers Lyrics
We meet inside the café
The air is thick like hospital
Choked by the gold on your finger
We were lovers
Bury the thoughts that resurface
Those hands were mine
And now our love has been forgotten
Like it was never there
We're just sitting here like strangers
You gave me yourself for just a little while
But it was you, it was really you
Staring into my coffee
It is not black just a shade of brown
Too scared to let our eyes meet
What will we see?
And now our love has been forgotten
Like it was never there
We're just sitting here like strangers
You gave me yourself for just a little while
But it was you, it was really you
And now our love has been forgotten
Like it was never there
We're just sitting here like strangers
You gave me yourself for just a little while
But it was you, it was really you
The space between us
Will not be beat
Oceans and past lives
We were lovers
The air is thick like hospital
Choked by the gold on your finger
We were lovers
Those hands were mine
Like it was never there
We're just sitting here like strangers
You gave me yourself for just a little while
But it was you, it was really you
It is not black just a shade of brown
Too scared to let our eyes meet
What will we see?
Like it was never there
We're just sitting here like strangers
You gave me yourself for just a little while
But it was you, it was really you
Like it was never there
We're just sitting here like strangers
You gave me yourself for just a little while
But it was you, it was really you
Will not be beat
Oceans and past lives
We were lovers

i love these lyrics describes how well you know someone when you love them, when you see the person other people dont see
i think
Holy Sh*t, this song is ace. It's so personal and raw. I think it's obvious what it's about, they lyrics are straight forward. It's about a forgotten relationship and they meet secretly.
some favorites:
Choked by the gold on your finger We were lovers
Too scared to let our eyes meet What will we see?
ps. I heard the Kele was gay. not that it matters, but i can't help but to think that maybe a relationsip that wasn't 'acceptable' influenced the song.
There's some interesting comments guys. I'll say what I think...
It's about an old loving couple who are meeting for the first time in ages. (either by accident or arranged)
The girl, or guy who Kele is singing about is obviously married "Choked by the gold on your finger" or become really well off, perhaps they married for money?
Anyway, the message to me is this. No matter how far apart we have become. It can never not be said that You and I never loved each other.
"You gave me yourself for just a little while But it was you, it was really you"
No matter what you can't deny it.
"The space between us Will not be beat"
No matter how long it's been, or how far we have gone.
"Oceans and past lives We were lovers"
I'll never forget.
And now our love has been forgotten Like it was never there We're just sitting here like strangers (lost love in their relationship)
Staring into my coffee It is not black just a shade of brown Too scared to let our eyes meet What will we see? (scared to confront each other)
This is very much like the story in Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell don't you think?
It is very like 1984. I was convinced it was about that scene when he and Julia meet in the park after Room 101. All the lyrics made sense. Then i heard the line "Choked by the gold on your finger" ( i thought he was saying something else there) and it became pretty obvious that he was not.
But no. It could be about 1984, but i doubt it. What its probably about is a man who still really loves a woman who is now married.
Those hands were mine... Sweetest line... And also... You give me yourself for just little while, but it was you, it was really you... I think when he says "Gave me", he means the act of making love, and he adds, when you love somebody sex isn't sex, but only love... Isn't it awesome?
This should have been on one of the albums - fantasic.
My take on it is that they were going out and never really got to know each other, they could have had a good relationship but were to scared to really do things with each other and talk.
Kinda like going out with girls (or boys..) in primary school, knowing you like each other but you just are to scared to do anything.
"Now our love has been forgotten" Meaning our love has just gone down... never remembered and could have been something if they had "balls".
nice song.
anyone knows the live-recording 'cells shaped like stars'? this seems to be an earlier version of this song. same meldy and rythm, and a similar text.
You my interpretations is written above, i think you guys are right. very good song, very cute :D like it!
lovers who are no longer together but meet secretly and are confronting one another nervously seeing as their lives have moved on. classic.
