Last call, lights on
Pull your faces off the bar
Go to church 'cause you need a good cleansing
Of body, mind and soul

I never thought it possible
I think I fell in love with someone worse than me
And I love you to death
I don't think I like you anymore

The healing power of alcohol
Only works on scrapes and nicks
And not on girls in seedy bars
Who drown themselves in it

They say that scent is the strongest sense
It's tied to memories
The stench of this place is almost as bad
As the memory tied to it

Tried to forget that sickening stench
With everything I've got
You can't trust a heart that was cold from the start
You waste your time on it

The healing power of alcohol
Only works on scrapes and nicks
And not on girls in seedy bars
Who drown themselves in it

You could play all day
And tell your friends that everything's alright
The truth is that your heart collapsed
Two years ago tonight

Should thank your lucky stars
For all the times you've been ashamed
You'll learn more from the harder times
Than times that you've been vain

The lesson you learned is priceless
If you can take a spin
You threw away your friends
As if drinks were all the friends you need

The healing power of alcohol
Only works on scrapes and nicks
And not on girls in seedy bars
Who drown themselves in it

You could play all day
And tell your friends that everything's alright
The truth is that your heart collapsed
Two years ago tonight

The truth is that your heart collapsed
Two years ago tonight

these lyrics are way off, but this song is amazing nonetheless.

it is sickening when people use alcohol and getting trashed as an excuse for ridiculous behavior.

bayside always comes up with the most creative ways of getting across what they want to say, i love them.

The meaning of this song could probably be summed up in two lines brought straight down from the lyrics:

"You threw away your friends as if drinks were all the friends you need"

    and

"The healing power of alcohol only works on scrapes and nicks."

Simple enough. Alcohol is a temporary replacement for real life. An all-too-short escape that's not worth the trouble in the first place.

the lyrics here are fairly accurate besides a ton of typos, which are slightly annoying. i think the cd cover-ish thing is a bit off... [from wat i can tell from other sites]

i think that the song is about falling in love with someone [i never thought it was possible, but i think i fell in love with someone worse than me] who is still troubled by something that happened two years ago, maybe a bad breakup or death [the truth is that your heart collapsed two years ago tonight] and on the anniversary she drinks herself into oblivion trying to make the memory go away [they say scent is the strongest sense...]. he's trying to tell her that alcohol isnt going to solve her problems [the healing power of alcohol...] and that the hard times in her life will eventually teach her valuble lessons, [you should thank your lucky stars for all the times you've been ashamed...] and she should stop trying to wish those times away, no matter how much it hurts.

i dont think its simply expressing disgust for ppl who get drunk and make fools of themselves, altho i do agree with the statement that its sickening...

    love the song!

This song is simple enough really. He's talking about a friend (obviously a girl) who uses Alcohol to cope with a hardship in her life which also obviously occured about two years ago. He feels bad for her, and maybe some pity there too? Iuno. I'm not good at that feeling crap. Also, the lyrics before the end are wrong.

It should be: Thank your lucky stars for all the times you've been ashamed You learn more from the harder times then times that you've been made A lesson learned is priceless gain if you can take the sting You threw away your friends as if drinks are all the friends you need

    bad ass guitar solo

    Love this song though

I agree with mieolhc and what he said about the lyrics in the booklet. I think they had the lyrics written down and when Ant. was recording the vocals he changed some of them, and they didnt bother changing them afterwards. Same thing with RHCP's Stadium Arcadium but thats off subject.

This song is obviously a follow up to "Masterpiece." Anthony is either talking to a close friend who he watches waste his/her life away...who didn't get the message from his first warning in Masterpiece.."Always the last one to leave the table emptied til every bottle in the place has been upside downat least a few times what a waste. What has become of you these days?" I've met these guys and it strikes me how in tune they are and thoughtful with what they say. A lot of times just flat out brutal honesty! One of the most creative guys in the biz.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
