There is actually two versions on this song. The acoustic version which ends with "its not about me, no no its never about me, its always about me." and then theres the ending, "watching their hearts in soil, grow mold."

wow..no one commented about what they think this song is about. well here goes: i think its about a single parent "now my lover's gone, im lost and alone" who is raising the children. so the parent is telling the child that they're here for them. but as the child grows older, theres no way to make the child stay so the parent is just accepting that fact and won't think about it until the child actually moves out and no longer needs the parent, leaving the parent without a lover or a child to take care of. thats my first impression anyway.

There are two versions of this song. There are minor lyrical differences, such as phrases being switched. I had only known about the acoustic version, but today I just found out about the one off of Something Real. And it's rekindled my love in this band. The piano is fantastic.

Anyways, whichever version you're listening to, the song is obviously about the struggle of picking oneself up after a relationship. I had never thought of it involving a kid, but it does make sense. I think it's about a very messed up relationship, on and off, and the protagonist has finally been convinced it's the end. However, s/he believes s/he'll come back if s/he waits.

I think it deals with the end of true love. Which is why it's so hard understand, since true love never dies.

I believe this song is based on the play "The Glass Menagerie" by Tenessee Williams. In the play, the father leaves, forcing his wife Amanda to care for and raise two children. Laura, the daughter, is disabled and has nothing in her life but her glass fgurines. Tom, the son makes money for the family and feels trapped, not able to pursue his dreams because of having to support his sister and mother, who is stuck in the past and slightly insane.

Tom wants to leave and become a writer, but he is trapped. Laura is forced by her mother to have "male suitors" come and see her, as the Amanda is living in the past and believes everything is still happy and well. In her devotion to her children, she has become overbearing and pushed them away. The portrait of the father remains above the mantle, a constant reminder of his presence being missing. Tom eventually does leave and never comes back to his family again.

This refers to Amanda's constant positive facade, when really everything is gone, her lover and her children.

This is just my take on it, and as they base music off of literature, I think its right. I suggest you read the play as well, as it is very good.

I never really thought about what the song in general means, but to me it's about an exboyfriend of mine. He calls me kid all the time, and I used to break up with him and he'd just be there completely helpless so the chorus: Kid I'm right here and I'm not leaving There's no way to make you stay

is like perfect for that. It's funny how the roles are reversed now.
