This Wheel's On Fire Lyrics

if your mem'ry serves you well
We were goin' to meet again and wait
So I'm goin' to unpack all my things
And sit before it gets too late
No man alive will come to you
With another tale to tell
But you know that we shall meet again
If your mem'ry serves you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode!

If your mem'ry serves you well
I was goin' to confiscate your lace
And wrap it up in a sailor's knot
And hide it in your case
If I knew for sure that it was yours . .
But it was oh so hard to tell
But you knew that we would meet again
If your mem'ry serves you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode!

If your mem'ry serves you well
You'll remember you're the one
That called on me to call on them
To get you your favors done
And after ev'ry plan had failed
And there was nothing more to tell
You knew that we would meet again
If your mem'ry served you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode!

Cover art for This Wheel's On Fire lyrics by Siouxsie and the Banshees

SIOUXSIE: "I had the hots for Julie Driscoll!. I can’t remember when this originally came out, but I’d have been about 11, and I was besotted by her, by the way she looked, by her voice. It was very different to watching Lulu on ‘Top Of The Pops’, this woman with a shaven head and huge black eyes. I thought she was incredibly beautiful, very spiky and strong and tough - not at all cute and cuddle and feminine. And I loved the song. It conjured up all sorts of fantastic stories for me." SEVERIN: "It wasn’t until I dug it out of my record collection that I realised it was written by Bob Dylan." Source: Melody Maker 17/10/92.

SIOUXSIE: "We nearly didn't do it when I found out itwas a Bob Dylan song. I sulked for ages." Source: Record Hunter 12/92.

The cover version, eerie and gloomy, is so true to the songs meaning. (Of course, this presupposes I interpreted it correctly...as Bet With The Devil (You Lose If You Have No More Tasks For Him), Aarne-Thompson fairytale index number...damn, haven't it ready. Funny that another comment (@ "The Band" version) says the song is about God...
